Oil on a pipe any ideas?
Hello,
I’ve recently brought a 2011 E90 Msport. I’ve noticed there’s small amounts of oil on this black pipe in engine, wondering If this should be a cause for concern? View post on imgur.com |

N57 engine isn't it?
thats the oil breather pipe, from what i've read they can split and cause that. its not a pressure line but you want to change it really as it'll make a mess! |

also known as pcv filter or vortex filter..its easy to change ..just a few bits to take off and also injector cables bolted off..new ones come with new gaskets..the old type had a loo roll shape filter inside but changed to a vortex cartridge which should be changed every 40-50 k miles..just google it

pretty sure the n57 to 2011 has them also..it has a rubber pipe from it to crankcase and vents the crank case..http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=303756 have a look at this post.

The n57 engine does not have a loo roll filter. There is a vortex filter built into the cylinder head cover and this isn't a serviceable item. A very quick check on realoem confirms this Going back to the pipe the op refers to, they tend to leak, but they are cheap and easy to replace. Last edited by bishbosh; 03-16-2018 at 04:22 PM.. |

Ahh, they must have changed it on certain engines. Realoem wasn't clear about this even though I selected a late 2010 engine.
For that price it's cheap to replace |

So do you have to take the cylinder head cover off to replace it?
On the M57 engines it was replaceable with the parts that were in the thread you linked to without having to take the whole cover off. |
