Carly and FRM2/3 gamble
Those with Carly who get the warning about FRM2/3 being too risky to code, have you taken the gamble?
It annoys me that it won't code FRM's properly, especially when every single person I've spoken to about doing it with a laptop has NEVER had any of the problems that Carly claim can be caused from coding/programming as opposed to it being their methods causing it. So, do you all type in the code and take the gamble? Google brings up various threads of people saying they've killed their FRM by coding it with Carly, but I wonder what that percentage is of users? |

I have done it many times successfully. I am using an Android phone + cable.
I believe many people who had issues have been using iOS with WIFI adapters. |

I use carly, never had any issues with mine or other cars, I always have the engine running though as I heard that it might cause a problem if you don't,,, and it wont code if under a certain voltage.

I would not do it if your FRM throws up the warning personally. They've identified models which have an issue with coding and made the warning come up. It's not all FRM2/3's that show the warning, just ones they've found are vulnerable to bricking.

I've used carly plenty of times on the frm without it bricking..
You truly must be one unlucky fellow if your frm bricks especially with one of the newer versions of carly purchased legitimately. |

I was under the impression that it shows the warning for any FRM 2 or 3, not just certain ones.
I have a genuine iPhone Carly 2 adapter and app, but am not willing to risk it |

Has nothing to do with being lucky or using genuine adapters etc. It's a fault with the FRM that only shows up when coding, as explained in the link above. |

This is the thing, no one ever kills them coding them with a laptop, yet Carly is doing it all the time.
It's easy for them to say it's a problem with the module, but it's clearly not |

I believe its the method of communication. The risk is greater using those wifi/bluetooth adapters vs reliable k+dcan.

Might be a problem with the slower communication, but I'd argue the evidence of replacing a lot of FRMs killed by Carly is more likely to do with its popularity and ease of use.

Old thread I know but Carly killed my FRM a few days ago, just from reading out the modules, I don't recall seeing a warning either

It’s funny that this thread got bumped yesterday, because just before it did i had plugged in my Carly to check for a fault (was an EGR one, so no surprise) and while I was on it I thought about checking the coding again.
There are quite a few changes I’d like to do on the FRM but again got the warning and bottled out! I’m glad I did, but still have in my mind that I coded my FRM2 in my old 330d no problem with it, but that was before they added the warning |

Wifi gen 2 adaptor and iPhone X
I had the FRM3 replaced yesterday and that fixed it. From what I've read its not carly, its the module, the euro shop I took it to said they have had a few cars FM's die just from reading codes, he said the module is faulty and plugging anything into the OBD port can set it off. Not sure how widespread, seems wide enough.

I shouldn't think so, it wouldn't be apparent unless trying to code something and as far as BMW are concerned, that is something a dealer would do.
In the wild they don't just fail as far as I'm aware, only when coding.... |
