Make sure you have the latency on the serial port set to 1. If not, you'll get connection errors. If you need remote assistance, you can call me. 503-679-3538

Wedge, can you send me the link to the software package you created? Just want to rule out the software I downloaded on bmwcoders isn't the issue.

I'll give the setting a second look.

Thanks bud, I'll give you a call one weekend when I get it downloaded.

Can you point me to where to download it from?

Thanks all for the help. Finally got the flash to work this morning. Key was getting the com port settings right just like Wedge said setting the latency to 1. Also, I was using COM6 so I to set the COM in WinKFP to unit E. I am using Windows 8 so thought that was the issue but everything worked fine. Make sure you start WinKFP in XP SP3 compatibility mode. Luckily didn't throw any codes and paddle shifters still worked.

Took it out for a quick spin and everything checked out OK. Will take her for a longer drive later. Again thanks for everyone's help!!

Wedge is the man! He helped me out last night and set my flash up and some other nice touches to the car and it's working great. This is by far one of the best mods for the 335i. The way it shifts in S mode and manual is 100 times better than stock. Thanks a bunch Wedge!

Did you ever manage to find a solution that worked for the pre 03/07 models without having to modify the transmission..?

Dude I hear what your saying but from a simple 5 minute flash to a complete transmission change just to get the Alpina shift going on.. just seems a little extreme..

Was thinking that there must be software controlling the shift even in my 11/2006 335i so could someone with skills be able to reprogram that software to allow a more seamless shift..? there must be some room for improvement to be gained..?

Anyone have any ideas

Just buy a used transmission and swap the valve body. You'll want to do a Zip-Kit on the valve body before installing. The MCM is attached to the valve body and you can just swap that to fix your issues and flash it with the Alpina flash once your have it installed.

Zip-Kit

I found valvebodies to be at least as expensive as used transmissions, so I just got a 2008 tranny with 27.000 km off Ebay. A bit extreme, yes, but I've been wanting that flash for years so I just said to myself "F... it" and went the whole route lol

Wedge - first, I want to thank you for being so darn helpful here on the forums. You're kind of a big deal.

Second, since I have a 02/2007 build, I'm in the same boat of needing to swap the valve body on my transmission... it sounds like the installation of the Zip-Kit is probably a really good idea. Do you think this is something that could safely be done as DIY, or would it be best served to a pro?

I don't think it sounds too bad based on the PDF guide, but I'm admittedly a little concerned about the seperator plate gasket de-lamination they mentioned.

Thanks in advance!

Well, every task has it's challenge and to be honest, Sammy would be a better person to ask because he's actually pulled the transmission apart and did a DIY on the valve body. The MCM actually rides on top of the valve body. Now, you can do a 1 for 1 swap without the zip kit on a low milage valve body. For the most part, most will be low milage. So it's really your call. Zip-Kit is a recommendation.

Once you get this done, if you need help with software install and flashing, give me a call.

Edit: Sammy has a shop and it might be worth paying him to help you swap the valve body because he has all the tools needed and the knowledge. Would be much faster. Not sure how far of a drive he is from you, but if it's not too far, would be worth it in my opinion.

Hmm. Ft. Worth would be a good 4 hour drive. I do have a line on a used auto with ~35k miles on it. Half of me is thinking it may be worth just trying to swap the valvebody since it's relatively low mile and then flash. Sammy's video outlining the process made me feel pretty good about doing that part. It's just splitting it open to replace the pieces (from the zip kit) that worries me most.

In the same token, I also have a line on a flood transmission but still waiting on a shipping quote. In a previous post you mentioned that flooding shouldn't affect the valvebody. Would that up the recommendation for the zip kit, though? (not 100% - seems pretty unlikely it would get damaged since there isn't a dipstick for the transmission so everything in the pan/valvebody is sealed)

I haven't had any luck flashing the Alpina B3 TCU, hopefully some of you may have some ideas.

Once I click the Program button at the end of the sequence to update I get a message in German stating that communication was interupted, this is a moment after the progress bar indicates 0%. I have had the message that there are now 62 flashes remaining.

At that point the light on my cable goes off and I'm no longer able to communicate through the OBDII port. I'm guessing that once the flash is aborted that the ECU has to go to sleep before another attempt can be made.

I now have a JB4 G5 installed but also tried this before the instalation and had the same result. I was sure to put the JB4 into Map 0 before trying to flash. I had mistakenly attempted to flash in Map 5 previously only to get a different, but expected, message that communication wasn't possible.

I have BMW Standard Tools with SP Daten 49 installed. I've successfully changed the battery charging rate and did a battery reset and also updated the key fob programming with this cable and software instalation.

Possible problems could be;
  • Hardware (have not set the seriel port latency to 1)
  • Software (incomplete update of SPDaten 49?)
  • User Error
Any ideas?

Well, I figured it out, it was option 3; user error!

I had forgotten to set the executable for WinKFP to Windows XP SP3 compatibilty mode since I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

All good now ;-)
