It started out directly after I bought the car. It was in February 2009 and I live in Norway. Winters get kind of cold here, and in February we usually experience something between -3 to -20 degrees Celsius. When the degrees starts to turn negative, the car sometimes takes a while to start. When it´s getting even more cold, this happens every time. And when it´s very cold, like -20, the cars battery runs empty if I wait for the car to start.

The dealer has changed lots of parts trying to figure out what is wrong with my car:
- Fuel pump
- Engine control unit including some relays
- Some other control unit (controlling other stuff in the car...) including some relays
- Temperature sensor
- Upgraded the SW

The problem is still there. Next week the car is going to the dealer again to change som major engine timing parts.

Just wondering if anyone has found the source for the start problem yet?
I have exactly the same problems. My dealer has changed a lot of the same parts but it still doesn't start normally. They now suspect that the Vanos system is not returning to its original position, and they will check that next week.

Hi Friends,

I have 2006 320si and living in Turkey. I follow this topic for almost a month. I realised that 320si has some chronical problems including cold start and catalytic. I have these issues as well. I think 320si is a great car and it's a really enjoy to drive it.

When I bought my car last year it was at 65k km. And sometimes cataylitic gives engine error because of lambda sensors. And especially in cold weathers it takes sometime to start the engine. In addition about 5k km a go, a problem emerged regarding the intake manifold. Dealer told intake manifold should be changed. And it's very expensive in Turkey. Do you know where may I get intake manifold cheaper? thank you all.

Oil consumption again: I have now done 2800 miles since last service, and have to top up a litre of oil. Normal? What are other people's experiences?

I'm at 26.000km at the moment, changed oil about 10.000km ago and no sign of oil consumption.

The level is at MAX.

Hi,

Just a short update. My dealer adjusted the valves, they had a bit to short opening and also changed the VANOS bolts. Hopefully this fixed my start problem. Will have to try it out for a while before I report back.

Very interesting, please let me know if they think that this is the root cause of the problem! They changed the VANOS bolts and adjusted the valves on my car this week. Will have to try it out for a while before I report back.

Waiting for a reply from my dealer what to do next. They told me on the phone today that my car might have leaking fuel injectors. My start problems always occur on cold starts when the engine has been sitting for a day or two.

That is not the problem at all. This is what mine did after standing for 3 days, the bore liners had fallen apart and it had to have a full engine.

Garage List
2007 BMW 335i  [0.00]
Hi you all,

i´ve owned my Si a year now and it has been a blast so far. Done around 25 500 miles (41,000 kilometres). Now tho i noticed one problem (or might be a problem?). Everything is still working like it should, but i noticed this ticking noise from the engine. Here´s a video where you can hear it:

(Don´t know why the video doesn´t work now.)

I dont know if i should worry? Anyone has any ideas where (or why) is this ticking noise coming from and what should be done to fix it?

I would appreciate a lot if anyone could help since i dont know anything about engines.

/ Tommi

Edit: Thanks for the suggestion E90_320si, i had the same feeling that it´s something about valves.

Fuel consumption

320si with just 16.000 KM

Starting problems some times (only rough idling for just 1-2 sec)
A ticking noise from the engine is on mine too but i believe this comes from the injection?

my problem is that the car has an enormous fuel consumption.

with every full tank my range is not more than 450KM

that's for driving in the city with average speed on the BC 27 KM/H

consumption reeds at 15,7 l /100 KM with normal driving.

whats yours?

Mine is 7,9 / 100km after update to new software and retuned the mapping in the ECU at my tuningspecialist here in Stockholm, and i only run my "black pearl" on Shell V-Power 99 octan fule. I have also installed Dr Schrick sport camshafts, and modified the intake mainfoild plus a K&N racefilter mounted in the original airbox for the best heatingresisstance and cooling. I have now about 180HP+ on the wheels, and about 201HP and 226Nm at the flywheel according to the roling road bench. It as fast as a 325i 218hp.

7,9???? unbelievable!!!!
you must be the only one in here with so low fuel consumption
even the E90 320 f/l with the efficient dynamic does not have such a low fuel consumption...

can you also state your average speed? that is a clue of the traffic and the consumption!

15,7 l/100 or converted to mpg is 19,7 mpg is mine....

any others?

Hi all,

Just a short update. New drivechain and adjusted the engine timing. Hopefully this will fix the starting issue. The weather is nice and the frost has gone for serveral weeks ago in Norway. May have to wait for next winter to see if the problem is gone...

It wont have! This is your bore liners beginning to split and loose compression.

As we all have or had starting problems (even me with 12.000 KM, small ones but still they exist) i believe that this has NOT to do with engine failure...

it seems more like trouble/problem in the throttle potentiometer or cold start valve or something similar...

Jonny whats your fuel consumption by the way???
