335i, Third or bust?

Im curious,

My 335i could be considered a fast car but going up against any other car of similar power, seems weak unless were rolling and your either in 3rd or just about to get to third.

Im aware that just planting the throttle will simply spin the rears and u dont go far.

i know we cant compete off the line witg things like Golf R's, S3's etc. On the move we have more than enough to pull on them (stock). Is there anything you can do to improve off the line traction. I am intending to put some Michilen pilot sport 2 non Rft's all round to help. Is there anything else to improve low gear traction?

PS2's are old, go for PSS instead, or Goodyear Eagle F1.

Maximising traction is complicated, but a good starting point is to ensure the rear end geometry is correct, and the stuff that keeps that geometry correct (ie bushings and whatnot) arent worn out and soggy. Various upgraded parts are available for the bushes and control arms.

I very much doubt a stock 335i would easily pull away from a GolfR or S3. They've got the same power and are probably a bit lighter, plus the 4WD means they'll get a better start and its very difficult to reel that back unless you've got a decent amount more power.

You're always going to run out of road before you get to put down your power vs. 4WD cars, especially the ones listed above. Even if you have 10% more power you won't win off the line. Physics will make sure of that.

The only solution is to get a good remap or Jb4. When you are putting down 360+ You'll start reeling them in near the top of 2nd gear, especially when their 4WD systems start sucking up their top end output.

On the road though, you are left for dust against these cars without significant suspension and power upgrades. They are lighter, shorter and newer, and probably have a far more capable gearbox.

To be honest im not really interested im beating S3's or Golfs it was mearly a comparison that at take off they jump ahead then as the 335i hooks up they stay slightly ahead. I mean on paper i think those cars have 1s on the 0-62. Its more a case of simply trying to get my power down more effectively. In real world driving you dont really get out of second before your going "take me to jail speeds" but 3rd seems to pull much harder than either of the first 2 gears. As stock as i said a 335i is more than fast enough for any situation. If really wanted to bully super hatches id of simply gone with a current M5 (which i may do next).

Other than tyres and playing nice with the throttle is there anything else?

I understand a jb4 would take the car into a different performance bracket but it would potentially void my insured warranty, After 9k of repairs id rather not do anything to potentially break something else.

My E39 M5 was the same, too much power & torque in the lower gears, once rolling though it was very quick!

I ran Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's on that and I've recently fitted them to my 330d, good rubber makes a lot of difference, but in the wet there's only so much you can do with a powerful rwd car

Not limited in 1st & 2nd as standard are they?

Quite a lot of turbocharged cars don't deliver full boost in the lower gears, so you're not at full power.

Manual or auto?

Mines auto (330d) and I find manually pulling away in 2nd helps me massively as 1st is totally pointless, too much spin and its over by 10-15mph. I can floor it in 2nd and avoid the time to change from 1st to 2nd, and also get much better traction thus providing a faster 0-62 run (no accurate measurements here I am talking bum dyno), so it may actually be slower but in my mind it feels quicker.

I know yours is a 335i and the gearing may well be different, so may not apply to you, also the difference in torque will play a part as well

Your feeling is right, launching in 2nd on my 335d gives a slower 60ft time but quicker 0-60.

So i take it the best options are to totally ignore 1st gear, get good tyres, turn on DTC and it should improve?

I use the same method, also brake boosting at times and it is better for me.

As has been said, not sure on the 335i. There is only one way to find out though, give it a go and see if it helps.
