Time for a career change...

I have been on light duty for several weeks now due to a back injury. Well, they are saying that I can either medical out or go on disability... I opted to medical out. I could have waited it out or have surgery but I really don't want that. The pain is manageable but not enough for me to return to active duty. In light of how crap the economy is and the talk of lay offs etc I think nows the time to move on. I find myself getting older and my dad, who runs a business wants to retire and pass it on to me.

I feel that its time to concentrate on the things that matter like my future with my GF and my family... Good bye long nights, good bye stress, goodbye crackheads, and good bye headaches... Am I going to miss it? Sure. But hey... it was fun while it lasted and I have a long life to live than to be debilitated at 32...

There is not much jobs that could make feel yourself really useful and fullfilled like be a doctor, go on.

David,

I know how hard it is to leave a job you love. After all, any and all public service career has certain amount of dedication to serving others at its core of enjoyment. However, I can see how in case of a Police officer this can change to something totally different these days. It's a very demanding and stressful job. My hats off to you and anyone else who makes that sacrifice and sticks to his/ her principles of doing good for others.

Take it as a fresh start and look at it as the next phase in serving others. There must be many other career options where the lesson you have learned and skills you have developed as a law enforcement officer, can be used to good use.

Good luck and keep us all posted

Do what you feel is best for you man. It sounds cliche but follow your heart and listen to what your guts are trying to tell you. More often than not it's usually right. G'luck with whatever it is you choose to do. I've met you a few times before and you seem like a cool guy. Best of luck!

Thanks Tondar and everyone else for the best wishes, yes, I was a peace officer... actually I am not going to miss it too much but being a business owner is a much better trade-in. With my back injury I am blackballed from ever returning should I choose to so it was a huge decision. Needless to say the health of my spine outweighed the job Call me citizen Dave now...

He lawyered up, took me to court, plead it down to 2 points on his record, and got to keep his license. When asked about it, I had no issues with it. He even shook my hand afterward.

How about becoming an attorney? Your connections as a former LEO would be very helpful.

I am a disabled vet... Fucking sucks getting out and I'm trying to get back in after 2 surgeries.

It's up to you man, you are 32 already. What was your MOS, Branch, etc.

Severe edit:

I though you were military. I'd say stick with it. Most of my buddies in the Marines, who are out now, or reservists, are mostly cops. Some in their 50's and still kicking ass even though they had medical issues in the past.

Scimitar- I'm assuming you're on the PERS retirement system? Are they gonna give you 50% retirement or what? What is your rank, any chance you could test out for a promotion to LT or something? I'd stick with it if you can, at least go on disability and give it a shot, if not, take the retirement after having tried to get back into it.

Lambtron: I am nowhere near retirement age and with 5 years in (vested) they gave me around 50% yes..no promotion to other spots especially LT. I do not have the educational qualification. I only have an AA in criminal justice and for that position a BA or higher is required. So pretty much I left on good terms and thats pretty much it. I am getting a full kickback from my vacation time, comp time, and they are going to give me the rest of my 2 weeks that i put in on sick time.

Pretty much a disk in my lumbar blew and the doc said I would need surgery and absolutely will not clear me to go back to work. Also, he said even if I had the surgery it would affect me for the rest of my life. As of right now I can manage the pain but pretty much about one week out of the month I am laid out because my sciatic nerve is being pinched. It hurts like a mofo but I can still get around.

I don't regret my decision and my girl and family agrees as well. Its time to move onto greener pastures.

Kroy: Yep, I am staying in cali. Thats where all my family is. May end up selling the bimmer soon to pay for my wedding

The thing is that with what is happening in CA right now I don't think you can count on your retirement money.
