Dilema, Do I upgrade my 335d to an M5
A friend of mine is soon going to be selling his November 2007 M5, SMG, Its got almost every conceivable extra, costing almost £73k. He has ordered a DB9. The dealer is offering him around the £30k mark. The car only has 14k miles at the moment, just been serviced, along with 2 new rear tyres.
At this price it seems like a bargain, Im sure I could get £25k for my 335d MSport, leather, Idrive, 19", Voice, and bluetooth. currently have 18k miles Part of me says be sensible, and stick with the 335d, Its got great economy, cost me nothing to maintain, as I have a service plan. But on the other hand, Im thinking M5 is just an animal and I must have it, at that price |

Do it mate! They are a complete Monster. BUT, how long have you had your car? How are you finding it and have you tuned it yet?
M5's can be had for under 20k if you know where to look.

Mine has been tuned. I doubt I can get any more out of it without causing issues. I have had it for a year now. Always wanted the M3, but thought I would be sensible an opt for the 335d.
I plan to go to Santapod with my 335d and my mate plans to bring his M5(chipped as well) And have a play with both, side by side. Where can you get a new shape M5 for the £20k mark, how many miles have they covered |

Do it!
Though do listen to Carlos about this What MPG would you get out an M5? What do you get out of 335d?If this is of concern to you have a good think about it, is the M5 to you not anyone else worth the extra costs in fuel, insurance, servicing, MOT time (probably going to go through consumables quicker)

On a normal week I get 35MPG, but every now and then, I have a bit of fun and only manage low 20's
The M5 will prob get around 20MPG on normal driving, down to 15MPG when I push it a bit. Tyres will be the same cost, but will have to fork out £350 every year for oil changes. add £1500 for the extra fuel. and I am probably looking at £2000 a year extra for ownership |

Not sure you would get this price....certainly not from a stealer. Plus how many private buyers out there want to spend £25k private as opposed buying BMW AUC?

Looked into them myself coodem, if you can extend the warranty you'll be OK... but run like a demon if you can't.

I have had a go, but as I was not fully insured and the roads were not ideal. I did not want to push it too much. Its a completly different beast, in a completly different league. warrenty will not be an issue to extend, well apart from the cost

I test drove one and seriously considered one - great cars
But you wont get 20mpg - I got 11mpg on a fairly gentle test drive - this and the severe gearchange (reliability-wise) in M mode put me off However £30k for that car sounds like a steal |

My mate had an M5 (before getting a 360!) and averaged 15mpg with usual town driving.
Not that he was bothered with a car like that!

They don't realise they've dropped so much. I'd say go for it, although you might find it hard selling for 25k being private. Advertise the car and see if you get any interest, least you'll know. |

Why did your mate go from a newish M5 to an old out of date slower 360? still love the dated look though.

Why he went from an M5 to a 360 i have no idea! He only had the M for 8 monthsish - but he has a history of swapping cars for something quicker each time.
He is a little stuck on the upgrade trail at present having done M3, 911, RS6, M5, 360.
