As long as the alphabet soup is present in any diesel engine, I will not bite again.
I don't want EGR, DPF, SCR, DOC, etc

Better get a gasser soon. Its only a matter of time the EPA will take their anti-diesel biased blinders off and discover gassers, including hybrids, emit small particulates at a deadlier rate than diesels and add DPF to the current GDI's, who BTW already use EGR.

The alphabet soup (don't forget DDE which has its equivalent in gassers) keeps clean diesel cleaner than most other forms of transportation, if you do "well to wheel" analysis.

Even the gassers are getting CBU as many of them are going the direct injection route. My buddy had to get a carbon cleaning in his Hyundai Elantra last month!

I simply refuse to have an unreliable car (diesel in particular) again.
Gassers get far less CBU than diesels. It is true that the new GDI implementation will cause the gasser CBU to increase, but I'll search for a more "traditional" injection engine.

I've also considered an older RAM 2500 5.9L which came without EGR from the factory. Just so I can take out my diesel reliability frustration out. But for what I use the car, it wouldn't be a smart decision. I drive on the streets most of the time, parking in tight places sometimes, so a larger vehicle would work against me.

I was thinking about a Lexus GS350 or Infiniti Q70. No hybrid models for me. Straight gassers.

My short list for the 335d replacement is being narrowed down to either a Subaru Outback or a VW Golf Sportwagen TDI. I would like something I can sleep in the back if needed. Since I have shrunk about 1.5 inches from my tallest down to about 5'9" now, I can fit in both of those cars. I haven't totally given up on diesels yet. But since the GTD is not coming to the USA any time soon, and the the Range Rover Sport TDI upcoming is too pricey for me, I am going for a less expensive vehicle. But I still like driving the D, so it'll take me a while to decide.

Going with a Toyota or Nissan, you will miss the German engineering feel, personality, performance, etc IMO. I get the maintenance aspect though.

My Sportwagen has ample room for me to sleep in the back, and I'm 5' 11". Pretty comfortable with a blow up sleeping mat(the skinny ones for backpacking). Get one with a pano sunroof, and you get a nice view of the night sky too. I like the ride/handling better in the VW over the Subaru as well, though I havnt checked out the newest outbacks. Both of my friends with previous gen outbacks always chose for us to take my jsw to the ski hill.

Not to bash the article- I'm all for a GTD wagon, though it would have been cooler if they were throwing that new 2L in there- I saw that he tried to make a joke.....but someone should have caught this mistake on a diesel article...

"VW says the Estate can hit 60 mph in 7.9 seconds; keep on the gas—er, throttle, and the GTD will top out at an utterly satisfactory 144 mph. "

A couple years ago, I wouldn't have understood the mistake. It wasn't till I got onto the diesel forums that I started learning from these knowledgable communities. Info from a forum puts it in easy words:

"I think the terms used are confusing.

A diesel does not have a "throttle". It has excess air at all times and the speed is controlled by the fuel injected, which has been calculated from the ECU "map" dependent on accelerator position, coolant temperature, air temperature, manifold (or boost) pressure etc etc.
An "air flap" is fitted into the air inlet duct and acts as a safety device in case the engine "runs away" e.g. oil seal failure in the turbo pumping into the engine. The flap shuts to starve the air.

On modern diesel engined cars there is no accelerator cable as everything is done electrically."

You'd be safe to call it "accelerator pedal" or simply accelerator.
