I'm gonna go with fahrenheit. 400 celsius is ~750 fahrenheit. That's REALLY hot.

Those were very interesting videos. Looks like BMW 0w30 is better than Castrol 0w30 but BMW 0w40 is worse. I wonder why? I noticed that in both vids the oil that appeared to be darker to start with did better.

In general though, I wouldn't expect the oil in our engines to get that hot, would it? I've never seen the oil temp gauge in my car go above 245ish, but that probably isn't measuring where the oil will see the most heat either.

^ that's correct, at least that's what my bmw dealer attests for
how do we know that whoever made the video didn't mix up oils?

And that's why cars have cooling systems.

hmm still suspect, the uploader has a BMW logo. they can manipulate anything to favor their agenda. i would be convinced if the uploaders sn was "castrol" and the bmw oil won.

This is exactly the point. Cooking motor oil to show what happens to it is useless since when used in an engine (even without a liquid cooling system) the engine block will bleed off heat from the oil. If the oil ever got that hot in the engine, the engine would be seriously overheated. Testing oil capabilities and qualities within an engine's operating range is really what matters; not cooking the living shit out of it.

Next time I fill up with Mobil 1, I must remember to scratch off that logo on my filler cap that says 'BMW Recommends Castrol'...

Castrol has a Which Oil to Buy link on their website. I selected my '08 335xi information and it came up with nothing. They are definitely making a "cheaper" version in their Edge product, at least here in the USA...
