2 weeks with the Alpina Flash

Firstly thanks to Sam [Makkan] for doing the flash. You liked me flooring it im sure

Initial impressions were a bit mixed, it changes gear very quickly in normal mode. You find yourself in 3rd very quickly, guess this is the fuel saving mode that people mention. Took a little while to get used to that but, now, love it.

Sport mode, oh god yes it changes so quickly when giving it some [ as i found out on the M11 on the way home fkin coppers!] it is so smoove you hardly notice the change. None of the lurching between gears that you get on the standard auto.

Overall impressions are positive. If you have a 6 speed auto, go for it, you wont regret it.

Thanks again Sam, lovely lad and knows what he is doing so you feel safe letting him sort your car out.

Could you give a few more details eg website , cost etc.

Any downsides ?

My 330D sometimes slams into 1st and 2nd when Im pulling away gently. Would be nice it would stop doing it.

Is this mod available for a N57 ?

Many thanks Sparky for the feedback.
And sorry that it caused you trouble on the way back. I hope you get out of it soon.

Jules, its only 335i things which they get as a bonus for having that engine.

Can an indie with Autologic carry out this work? or is it a different type of software needed?

Unfortunately not. You'll need BMW flashing software for that.

Sounds like a great modification.

Question for Sam, How much do you charge for the Alpina flash and where abouts are you based.. please say north London

Also if I take the car into BMW for a service or other work can they mess up your work and return it back to standard..? I mean is it obvious to them its been changed when they plug into it..?

Completely agree. Sam did mine about 6 weeks ago now. It transforms the drive.
Only downside so far is, when in S mode it kinda assumes you always want to go balls out and can change up a little harshly if you back off the throttle.
Anyone with a 335i Auto would be crazy not to pay Sam a visit for this simple mod.

Just been reading up on this and have discovered that its only available for 335i from 03/2007 onwards with a N54 engine and as mine is a 11/2006 I guess I cant have this done..

Actually further reading from a thread on bimmerfest suggests that this may work with my car... I'm confused..

If Sam could post up a comment to confirm one way or the other I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Hi
Had sam do my 335i with Alpina and so far seems a lot better.
I love the fact you can also see what gear you are in such as D1, D2 etc.
Well worth the money.

Finally got this done yesterday eves and am so very glad I did.
In 'Drive' I couldn't feel the gear change at all. Felt like one seamlessly long gear especially with music on just louder than the engine.
I can honestly say that I thought I was driving a new car it was that smooth and it has made me realise just how 'clunky' the gear change could be previously.
With a jb4 the car is just uber aggressive while still being silky smooth, it's actually in danger of becoming too effortless a drive
Mikeoz is correct too. Seeing which gear you're in is nice. One of those small things that should have been given done from the factory imo.
Thanks again Sam, will be catching you up for the next bit of work shortly

:-( so is there no way of putting this on the pre 03/07 cars? Even with swapping a part out or is the complete gearbox different??

There is a way... it is just fairly expensive, and a lot of work...

You may as well just buy a new car...

There is a module on top of the gearbox which i believed has to be upgraded.

Brand new from BMW these cost a lot... And you wont be lucky enough to buy one without a gearbox i dont think...

Then you whole gearbox has to be dropped to fit it and then coded i believe...

Someone please correct if i am wrong

Yeah some kind of valve body unit on the gearbox that needs changing and you can do some kind of zipkit modification on it...?
http://www.sonnax.com/product-lines/...ion/parts/4058

There is a how to on here somewhere... or you could just replace the gearbox from a post 03/2007 car.

There is also some more info about this on this thread :

Thanks for the comment.
Personally I would pay the £50 just to see the gears on the display lol.

With a remap jb4 /emaps etc it brings the 335i in line with the Alpina B3 and makes the gears much more aggressive in sport. Feels much better than in standard form.
Alpina know what they are doing and so does Sam.

Great mod.

Reading about this flash really makes me want it - seeing what gear it's in is useful and I miss that from my previous DSG car! I assume it is a no-no though for a car with extended warranty?

Just got my Alpina flash and I believe it is a MUST for anyone with an AT. The gear shifts are smooth and very quick. In sport mode, the shift point driving it calmly is around 2800 RPM's for anyone that is curious compared to the stock sport mode at 2500.

Meeting with Sam was done in a parking lot, he did it right there in no more than 30 minutes.

Thanks a million for the flash!
