Waste-gate actuator wrong size?
I just ordered a new rear waste-gate actuator (for the rear turbo) so I could replace the old one. I ordered this one from getbmwparts and it doesn't match the waste-gate actuator that I pulled out of the car. The one that was shipped to me has a shorter arm by about 4 " and the hole that is supposed to be used in too small to fit around where it connects to the actuator.
The plot thickens: I tried this replacement last year and ordered the same exact part number from ECS Tuning. Same issue then and I just tallied it up to my mess up and it was too late to return it until I remembered to. I've triple checked the boxes and the part numbers and I have in fact been ordering the rear waste gate actuator. Does anyone who has done this replacement have any insight into what I'm doing wrong? I assume what I'm getting is the front waste-gate actuator but that damn thing is so deep in the engine that I haven't tried to compare....yet. |

Wastegate arm was upgraded in diameter with a Sib in 2007. mine was replaced a one of the first wastegate rattle warranty claims I guess before they pulled the plug on automatic replacements

No this isn't a thickness issue... It's actually shorter...so much so that when connected it won't reach the actual waste gate.

I'm guessing that's your problem then. That part number is a bank 2 actuator for an early (pre-3/08 production) 3-series.
You might already know this, but BMW has never listed replacement wastegate actuators in the regular parts catalog. The part number you ordered is only mentioned in one service bulletin, and it's meant as a fix for early E9x cars with the first wastegate design. Why does that matter? Well.... 1) the early and late design turbos have a different diameter pin where the actuator attaches. They likely won't fit any later cars without modification. 2) You have a 135i. The 135i carries a different part number for the rear turbo assembly (11657649291), and BMW does not list a separate actuator for these cars. The front turbos are the same, but not the rear. The rear 135i turbo is listed as only valid for the 135i and the Z4. I'm guessing this is why the wastegate rod is longer on your original actuator.

I have an early 335i (2006, UK) and I am going to replace the turbo's with a low mileage set that are coming from a 2009 335i. Do you know if this is a straight swap? (I am getting complete twin turbo assembly including manifolds from the donor car). |

Well holy crap! Thanks! I guess I'm left helpless then. The only way I can get a new actuator is to get a whole new turbo assembly. That stinks.
What have the dealers been doing for the SIB that tells them to replace the actuators before they replace the turbos then? Very odd....but it's their prerogative. Thanks again! |

That SIB only applies to cars built before 9/2007. I don't think any 1 series with the N54 engine were built before then, so it only really applies to early E9x and E6x cars.

That's what I was referring to. The wastegate rattle SIB only applies to early cars. The wastegate actuator replacement is only for cars built before 9/07. On those early cars, it is the first step BMW wants the dealerships to take. Cars built between 9/07-3/08 had the updated actuators from the factory, but original turbo (small pin) design. Since these cars came with the updated actuator design, the SIB does not apply. On later cars, there is no 'approved' fix other than turbo replacement. BMW does not want anybody adjusting the wastegate linkage. Cars built from 3/08+ have the larger pins on the wastegate arm, and no actuators are even available separately through BMW. Someone working at home could buy actuators for a pre-3/08 car and adjust them, but dealerships shouldn't be suggesting this except for on 2007 models.

Thanks for explaining that! Tons of help! I guess I'll live with it until I have the heart to replace the turbos or upgrade
