Anyone uses the Independent Heating System in thier e92's?
Anyone uses the Independent Heating System in their cars?, I have tried it for two morning when there was due a frost expecting the next morinig, to be honest bit dissipointed. Seems to just blow cold air around, and does not demist the front window.
From reading the manual I thought it might start the engine at the preset time to heat up the inside of the car. Should it do this or not? Last edited by Estoril Sport; 12-05-2009 at 04:30 PM.. |

I just go out and start the car and leave it running for 5 mins using the dodgy key trick:
Get in the car and close the Insert the key fob and start the car with your foot on the brake pedal Then without removing your foot from the brake pedal stop the engine and remove the key Finally with your foot still continuously on the brake pedal press the start button and the car should start without the key in the holder. (do not open the doors during this procedure) You can the get out and lock the car with the key fob so no scum can jump in and drive off. If they did they wouldn't be able to start it again and you can tell the insurers that you have both keys and the car disappeared in the middle of the night without your knowledge! Wouldn't try this in a dodgy area however

You've lost me. Indepedent Heat does not give anything on google, except for this conversation. Are you talking about being able to set temperatures for driver /passenger?

I tried last week as well expecting great things but the same as you was a little dissappointed
From what I read in the manual I did think it would start the engine. although I suppse it said dont use two days in a row without moving the car as it can drain the battery. I was expecting all windows demisted and the car nice and toasty. It felt like full power cold air so just thought I was doing it wrongly. |

I don't have i-drive. However all E9x's have I believe an electrical grid heater which could be? programmable thru I-drive. No clue what its output is, but a 300W heater is not great and would pull 25 Amps. Your battery is up to 90 Amp-hr, although theoretically that should give 3+ hours of heating at 300W, I bet you get nowhere close to that.
I've got a 180 amp alternator. When cold i switch seats to max (60 seconds and it becomes too hot for me, have to turn them down), and heater is on automatic, so it will pull max. curent too. Would be nice if seat heating would be activated upon unlocking the car, depending on outside temperature, |

Indeed Carl, start engine and drive right away.
Idling an engine and letting it warm up is bad news, although I know many who do it.

at 800-900 idle the 330-335 is pulling thru some 45cfm of air. With the minimal fuel it uses you expect it can warm up all that air, and the engine?
The short answer is that is why cold idling is no good for your engine. If I'm wrong I'll replace my central heating with a 316d engine.. |

The heating system is an option in ADDITION to the professional iDrive Nav. It has a separate remote and it does actually heat up the car. The function you are referring to is just timed activation of the fan. Obviously this will do nothing to defrost/demist the car, it is actually of more use in hot weather to allow some ventilation before you get in the car. I don't think this heating system is an option available to E9x vehicles, but you can have it on an X5/5er/7er (Auxillary heating system option 536).

Are you sure you’re not getting confused with the feature that allows you to cool/vent the car in hot weather.
You can pre program the fans to come on and move air around the cabin, can’t see how it can warm the interior without an auxiliary heater or starting the engine, which would be illegal in the UK There is also a “residual heater” function, which you can use to keep the cabin warm after a run, without starting the engine |

Keys go back to the lease company in 10 months, so not too concerned

Turns out I dont have the heated system
I read the manual and went out and checked and their is a cool air system and the hot air system. I only have cool air, which no doubt will be useful in summer (if we get one) Oh well, at least that answers that question. You can tell by going into direct operation and seeing if you have both options. |
