Canadian buying 335 from US
I am looking at buying a 335 from the States from a private party. In Canada, if money is still owing on the car, I would make the bank draft out to "Joe Smith and BWM" since both parties hold an interest in the car. Is it the same way in the States?
Also, how do I go about doing a lien check if the seller says that there is clear title on the car? Thanks!

I don't know the answer to any of your questions. But here is another to ask. Do you have emission or safty requirements to address to import the car? I know that is the case importing into the US.

While the standards are pretty much the same, there's no question the car must undergo a certification process before crossing the border.

No certification process. Only standard provincial and federal safetys which any near new car will pass. The federal safety may only consists of verifying the VIN number and to ensure DRL and perhaps a french airbag sticker. The cost is 60-100 for a provincial safety and may not be required in some provinces here in BC it is mandatory. The federal safety is collected at the border it is 272 I believe as is the duty at6.1%, the GST and the 100$ AC levy. You will also need aletter from BMW NA which is located in Canada that there is no outstanding recalls on the vehicle. Don't forget to prenote the US border three working days in advance you intend to export the vehicle. Find the port you will use and fax them a copy of the form they require. Make sure to stop at US customs first.

i looked into this when buying new cars in states and importing to cananda... on 335 you will save $500 so it's not worth it, only cars that are worth it is domestics like z06, etc... also you will loose your warranty

Not true at all. The OP is buying a used BMW, which will still save him several thousand dollars, even after duty and taxes are taken into account. The warranty is definitely valid for BMWs imported from the US to Canada.

no its not.... there was a tv show I cant remember where I saw it, but basically what they were saying is that car makers void warranties if you buy in states and bring it to canada (i believe only toyota didn't void)... so even if you buy used that has a year or so warranty left it will be void
