Official BMW upgrade for 320d models!

BMW has announced an optional power upgrade for its 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel engine among a series of new developments from its newly established M-Performance range – all of which are planned to be revealed for the first time at the Paris motor show.

Set to be made available on the 120d, 320d and 520d, the engine upgrade adds a larger intercooler and remapped software along other modifications, raising the output of the popular diesel engine from a standard 181bhp and 280lb ft of torque to 197bhp and 310lb ft.

BMW isn’t revealing too much on just what performance gains the so-called BMW M Performance Power Kit brings, but early information hints it leads to a 1.0sec improvement in 0-62mph acceleration in certain models, without any increase in combined cycle fuel consumption or CO2 emissions. As a factory-offered option, the existing warranty terms and conditions also remain valid.

Hopefully this is available for us with the same LCI engine....

Wish they would do this for the 330d!

From memory the 177 was also taken to the same BHP as the 184 seems to be being taken to?

Anyone know why this is only for the 320d? Is it simply because these are the most common engine so it's the biggest market for BMW?

The original 177 engine upgrade increased the power and torque as follows:

Power: 130kW to 145kW
Torque: 350Nm to 390Nm

For the new engine the figures are:

Power: 135kW to 147kW
Torque: 380Nm to 420Nm

so slightly better power gains on the older engine, but similar torque gains, albeit at a higher starting point

My dealership rang today to say the the kit I ordered had arrived! Its booked in for next Tuesday at 11.30. The chap said they will be able to fit it all in about an hour and a half so I could wait there. Looking forward to seeing the change. I'll post how it all goes

That's extortion...

Mapping it will cost less and give you more power!! Too late now for the chap who has forked out £1100.

Nothing worse when a mapped version shoots by you with 200+bhp

Sorry but I had to say....

The official kit is expensive but then keeps warranty etc. Remaps are good but when stuck with LCI model with locked ECU whcih has to be removed to do the work and with BMW detecting some now its getting harder to do this. I went for the kit as it game me hassle free upgrade. If I could have gone with evolve switch or superchips I woudl have but both where unable to read / Code my ecu without removing the ecu. Somthing I did not want to go with.

Hi all,

I thought I would give my update on the power kit so far (even though it was only today)

I was booked in for 11.30 at the dealership, when bought the kit they said it would be a 2 hour job so decided to wait there while it was fitted. The bulk of the kit was fitted in very good time. They then had to download the new map to the engine. The service rep was very apologetic and said there would be another 2 hours wait to download it. As the weather was terrible I was still happy to wait. When it came to pay the rep gave me an M sport carbon keyring to apologise for the wait, a nice touch I thought. Many thanks Rybrook Worcester

When pulling out from the dealership, in first and second, it felt quite similar to standard. When pushing on in 3rd or more it made a big difference. It pulls much more, on a duel carriage way it felt much better. After only a bit of time with the car it's tricky to explain, the car seems more alive and responsive, it revs more freely and seems smoother. As the review I read on here, it makes overtaking much easier, there is a satisfying surge when accelerating. Sorry if I'm babbling.. This has only bene the drive home from the dealer, plenty of time to get used to it. It is good to know that its still warranty covered though.

You do get a plaque, here is a photo

James.
