Question Seal leaking on rear carrier... options

1. Would you pull the carrier out of the car, tear it apart and replace output shaft seals?

or

2. Acquire a very low mileage carrier and just replace the whole thing?

Existing carrier has 190k+ on it and possibly have access to one that has only 23k.

Are you talking about the rear differential? You can replace the shaft seals without removing it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Yep, rear differential.

So, the output stubs are full float and not held in by C clips inside?

They have lock rings.

Okay, I see now.

I had looked at the parts diagram and saw the clip and figured you had to remove the cover and pull the clip to get the stubs out.

The clips must just be a spring type where you can just pry the output stubs out of the carrier.

Not done an E90 diff, but every BMW diff I've seen is this way.

Got any idea who is OEM vendor on the seal? I'm finding decent prices on Rein.
