Hey guys just bought a 06 330xi 6mt and I find the stick kind of long.
Been doing my searches and wanted to know what you guys thought of the getting just short Shifter vs getting the short shifter kit.
First, I was just looking to bring down the height of the manual height of the stick and i was told that this would shorten the throws from first to 2nd.
Was told the shifter was weighted and this would help.
Is this true?
but if I wanted better performance in all then the kit was the way to go.

What do you guys think?

The BMW OEM Short Shift Assembly is about $100. The whole SSK is about $230. The knob on its own is $90 + $40 for shift boot.

You could just get the kit without the knob and boot first. Try it out, and if you feel you need the additional weighted knob, then get it. Or at that point, you can get any other weighted knob like the M one.

That's basically my plan, as I'm looking to do the same.

I was thinking about getting the short shift knob first ( I believe its weighted)
BMW OEM M one first. I was told this would with the height and throws.

and if I wanted more proformance then even shorter throws then get the whole kit..
does that makes sense .. Am I corrected in that?

I was told by the BMW Toronto guys that the SSK is not available for xdrive / xi models. I would get it in a heartbeat if this info. is incorrect.

I did try the shorter weighted leather M knob (the older one, not the one from the current kit) on the stock lever, and found the difference to be notable...but mostly for the leather, not the throw action.

I tried the short lever with the short knob - and found it too much change - likely because my 6MT can be very stubborn about going into 1st. I was left sitting at a few green lights...if anyone else drives your car, they may find it very difficult to hit 1st & 3rd

I settled on the short lever with the stock e90 knob for now...until I'm bored and try the short knob again.

So: The knob is easiest to try, and it's nice to have a choice of which style.
The lever is more important than the knob for throw...but is also harder to install (but you can DIY)

Keep in mind these are two different things you're talking about. One makes the throw shorter, the other makes the stick shorter. If you make the throw shorter the shifter will be just at tall you'll just move it less. This wasn't what I was looking for so I got a shorter leather knob (don't need a new boot at least not on my car) and I accomplished exactly what I was looking for, it's shorter and my hand moves less. Sure some may want the throws sorter yet again, to each their own.

tischer has the best pricing for the OEM BMW ssk - I found the throws to be slightly improved but not as dramatic as an aftermarket kit

I was looking at getting the Alcantara kit but looking at guys selling theirs used they all looked worn quite a bit. So because it looked like it wears easy I opted to go for the the BMW E90/91/92/93 3 Series 'M' Perforated Leather Shift Knob w/ Boot. It did bring the height of the knob down by maybe 1/2" from stock and it felt nice shifting but not the best. Today I installed the short shift lever and it really brought the height down even further. But i do have to say that it feels better shifting with the short shifter. When shifting before the SS was installed I felt like I had to make an effort to shift fast in order to rev match, but with the SS installed I find it it just happen with my normal shift throw. I don't know if I was lazy in shifting before but it feels better now, but its only been a day so that might change

I first put the oem ssk on my 335 but I took it out after a week. And now I am really happy with that 'M' Perforated Leather Shift Knob too. It looks good and didn't make the shift too stiff but still fell the throw being shorten.

would the ssk make it feel like the m3 shifter? different tranny I know, but throw wise? when I played wtih the M3 in the showroom I noticed the short shifter, its noticable but not what i'd call "short" .. I like it tho

I have the performance knob on mine, it is a way shorter than the stock one, most ppl dont like because it is too small, but after I got used to it I started to love it.
