Software Update - Failed - Heathrow BMW

I had my car booked in today to have the Security update applied.

It went in to Berry BMW Heathrow this morning and I just had a call from them to say they cannot apply the update.
Apparently there is a problem in the MOST network and they are blaming my parrot kit for this.
As such they want to charge either 2.5x hours labour (£290 inc VAT) to look at the MOST connector on the back of the radio and see if there is an issue.

Or, they will return the car to me, let me check this out and then if I wanted to book it back in again charge me £99 diagnostic fee to try again.

Has anybody had any issues like this related to the software update?

I have already taken measures to secure the port, and wonder weather its worth the agro?

Not worth the agro, buy a disklok and call it a day! I keep reading that these so called updates rarely work- depending on year of car etc.

That sounds weird. How can a parrot kit stop the security update working.

Maybe it is not even necessary as the parrot kit might stop the would-be-thief from accessing the ecu

for over £300 is it not worth getting something like a clifford/toad system with a tracker etc!!!

just seems like an awful lot of money for an "update"

They are fully taking the piss. The update is free. Even if you sort out the issue with the parrot or what ever they cant then charge you to try again as the update is free due to bmw and there security fault! I would quote what iv just said to them and wait fir a reaction as that sounds like robbery. If you told bmw uk they were trying to charge for a free update they would be livid.

Got the car back now. At least they did clean it

I am going to look at the Parrot wiring, but as far as I can remember the MOST cable is just plugged straight back into the head unit. It is not interrupted like the rest of the cables for the parrot.

tbh, I cant be bothered to argue with them.
The car is due a service in 4k, so will just book it in at another dealer and ask if they can have a go with the update.

Anybody got a dealer recommendation near Slough / Heathrow area? After talking to the technical guys @ Berry, I am not sure I want them to service my car. Seemed urterly clueless/uninterested when I tried to explain that the parrort does not connect to MOST.

Berry Heathrow are not very good in my experience and expensive! There is Sytner at High Wycombe, Maidenhead and Ascot. Had mixed experiences at all of them! Dick Lovett in Hungerford always seems reasonable and helpful.

If you want main dealer, nothing beats BMW Battersea Stewarts road.

Tell Berry that they just lost a customer and that it's on the forum!

People have recommended sytner sunningdale before. Battersea seems to be the highest rated on here!

Berry Heathrow.... I had the misfortune of them doing work on my car - NEVER AGAIN! They really don't know what they're doing!

You should see my wiring & damage caused, out of sight!!!

I'd definitely get the upgrade done on the 'very stretched' basis that insurance companies actually wrote to owners advising of the upgrade. Only reason they'd spend money on that admin task is if they saw it as an opportunity to weevil out of their liability (or part) if the car was ever stolen. Just the view I've taken on it really.

And whilst on Stephen James in Bromley is the best service I've had ever. Saying that Battersea were not bad when I used them in the past. All you do stay AWAY from croydon!

Thanks for all the suggestions of dealer guys! Will be checking out which is closest / most convenient when it comes time to service.

Whilst on the phone to Berry, I tried in vain to get them to just pull the radio out and see if the MOST cable was connected / had popped out the back. This is when the quoted the crazy amount of labour to do this and I told them to just return me the car.

Anyway I thought id have a look after I drove home. Have never used my CD changer before and the "CDC" option on audio selection was just "--".
So I found a CD and popped it in the CD changer and tried to listen to it. Nothing happened.
Took the radio out, and lo and behold the MOST cable was slightly loose. Pushed it all the way back into the back of the Radio and re-installed.
Straight away the CD Changer allowed me to listen to my cd!
Took all of 5 minutes, and that includes finding a CD!

So, I shall never again use Berry Heathrow. Trying to charge 2.5 hrs just to LOOK behind the radio and see.

I've had positive experiences with Sytner BMW Sunningdale / Ascot also got a good quote.

It's pretty unlikely a Parrot kit would cause a problem with this update. Battersea would be very pleased to take a look at this for you whenever you want, just PM me

I've had the same 'its your parrot' excuse used by Sytner Sunningdale in the past with my E82...

Just disconnect it, send it back to them and don't agree to pay anything!

These guys are muppets. Do what I did

Collect the car with it re booked for x date once you've removed the parrot kit so they can apply it

Then simply don't turn up.

They'll release the car because you've booked it back in, so you should get out of whatever charges they want to apply

And then take your car I a dealership not staffed by odious oxygen thieves. Might I recommend vines of redhill, sytner sunningdale or cooper Cobham depending on your location

Honestly getting your car away from berry heathrow should be your top priority, and don't go back there

One day I will post up about my adventures with them idiots a few months ago

Strong but justified words fella, at least in my experience

Glad to hear it's sorted.

Battersea has excellent reviews on here but it's also knowing the right people! ;-)

I can't see why they were concerned with the MOST connection when the security update has nothing at all to do with MOST. It goes directly into Cas with a can connection
