So I saw a lot of people making love to LSD's on these forums which was odd considering what an LSD actually does so I decided to record a bunch of data before and after my install.

When using drag radials I gained a total of 0.00 seconds in straight line acceleration whether it be from 0-60, 0-100 or my 60 foot launch times at the strip.

On the road course it will be a whole different story, but the 335i doesn't belong there anyway.

how about 0-60 on street tires with and without LSD.. must be a significant difference there.

LSD's really don't have much to do with going in a straight line.

When I used to punch it in third on my street tires my car would pull hard right, kinda scary actually. Now it goes straight. That's the difference.

well first of all, what mods? r u breaking traction with ur drag radials with NO LSD? if not, then that means ur drag radials r gripping, which means ur putting down the power properly. If ur on drag radials and not breaking traction, a LSD wont do jack in this case

Good dedicated strip tires are way more beneficial than an LSD with street tires when it comes to launching.

A lot of people with high hp cars on here who use dedicated tires at the strip will mention that the LSD didn't really offer any tangible gains (makes sense too).

With street tires you'll pickup a very small amount of time, but the control you have over the car will be very noticeable.

Edit: I should add that if you don't know how to control your car the LSD might actually make the car more dangerous to drive. Standing and spinning is usually less dangerous than fishtailing and putting power down.

One thing to add, any car can belong to the track with the right setup and in the hands of the right driver. I out run Porshes on the track, not because I have a better car, but I am a better driver. There are always "better" track cars. But 3 series delivers just fine against the competition.

Look at it this way, if you have a LSD and you are going to use it on a road course, then it will help you out and if you use it on the 1/4 mile, it is not going to hurt anything either way.

As for a waste of money, it is only a waste if the person that is spending the money on the mod think it is.

And for the statement that our cars should not be on the track, that is not true, it is the driver that should not be on the track if he/she does not have the skills to drive.

I do feel people are a bit misinformed about the LSD on this platform. The squirmish rear end on our cars needs plenty of other work and the LSD on its own won't fix that. In fact, wheelhop gets worse when you switch over to a LSD. That can only be fixed via upgraded subframe bushings, diff bushings, toe arms etc. Depending on how much power you're putting down, it's a slippery slope.

I'd also agree on the point that you need to relearn the car's behaviour with LSD. It does make it more tail happy, especially with a thicker than stock rear sway bar. Taking some HPDE courses would definitely help get a feel for understeer/oversteer and basic vehicle dynamics regardless of one's level of mods.
