What is this??
I have this on my exhaust and it looks like something that mounts somewhere but is not connected to anything, what is it??

I believe that it is akin to a helmholtz chamber -- in that it is used to tune out certain acoustic properties -- and I've seen them on the exhausts of quite a few BMWs.
