Dealer tells me it will be $700+ for new rear rotors and brakes
Got a call from dealer in Dallas area today as I dropped my car in yesterday as the brakes were squealing really badly. I told them it was the passenger front but they said it was the rears?
They said the previous owner looks like they must have driven the car with the emergency brake on or used the hand brake a lot. He told me it was going to be over $700 to replace the rotors and the emergency brakes pads. He said this was not covered under the maintanence plan. I have had the car for over a month and about 1500 miles. It just started making the brake squealing a couple of weeks ago. It now has a litlle over 21k miles on it. Any help here? |

Whether it was bought brand new or CPO, the full maintenance plan is still in effect.
This should be a) warranty issue or b) maintenance issue, either way you shouldn't be charged. I'm quite interested in your account, a couple months back I had a major grinding/squealing from the rear brakes. The OBC said I still have 5k miles on the rear pads but the grinding was something horrid so I took it in. Pads and rotors checked out ok and the noise went away. But it crops up every now and then, annoyingly. Also, for some weird reason my rear brakes' life expectancy is less than half the front pads'....

MY SA said that they normally be under maintenance. However, since it looks like it was done by the owner it is not covered? He said he is checking with his service manager. Also, I did not buy this car from a BMW place. I bought it at another dealership that deals in high end luxury/sports cars.

My dad took in his car in at 20k miles when the dome light burned out. Dealer replaced it under the maintenance plan without charging him a penny and he is the 2nd owner.

So this is the parking brake, not the normal brake system? Worn pads/trashed rotor on the parking brake is not normal wear. The overwhelming odds are that the previous owner did drive around with the parking brake on, and that would not be a warranty issue.
However it is odd that a parking brake problem would cause brake squeal. Is the squeal all the time or just under braking? |

Yes, just got off the phone with my SA. He said it was the emergency brake pads that are worn down metal to metal that is causing the problem. Thus it has messed up the rotors. He said the emergency brake is not a maintanance item. The squeal is pretty much most of the time, at least 60 percent but not constant. He also told me that the groves in the front rotors are normal wear and they will need to replace those when they get below specs. I told him I was not happy about this and told him I guess I need to call BMWNA to dicuss my dis-pleasure. I ask him if he could talk to anyone on his end. He said he would talk to his service director. We will see. |

Emphasis added. I wish the OP well, but want to point out that there is logic to the dealer's position--if in fact the problem is the parking brake system. |

If the squeaking is coming from the emergency brake being left on and wearing down the e-brake pads down to metal that is not covered under warranty. Theres a line where stupididity comes into factor. Im not saying you drove with the ebrake up but maybe who ever had it before you did. Thats just going off your first post..

Just got off the phone with BMWNA
They talked to the dealership and said that it was going to cost me what I was quoted. BMWNA said that the dealer was going to check again to make sure that was what had caused the problem and they would let me know. I guess I'll be looking for some new rear rotors and Ebrake pads to replace. How hard is this? I have replaced rotors and pads on a civic and it was pretty simple, I jut think I have ever down the back nor the Ebrake pads. |

You can't expect them to cover abuse under any warranty and that is what this sounds like.
If you would have bought it CPO you might have a leg to stand on since they should have found that in their inspection but, you didn't so you are stuck. Sorry to hear that. |

Just a follow-up. Dealer still has my car. I talked to the person where I bought my e90. They called the dealership and talked to my SA. They said that they normally deal with another SA and he is out of town, so they ask me to wait till he got back to see what could be done. However, they told me that if it had been like a week after a bought the car they would be more open to paying for the repair. I was just questioning the "125 point inspection", blah, blah, blah that they told me was done on the vehicle.
I keep telling my SA that I think that the last time I was in shop they did some work on my emergency brake (for a squeak when I sat in the car). They told me they found out it was the Ebrake, so they lubed it. It was the next day that I first noticed my brakes starting to squeal. I sent my SA an email complaining and asking about the brakes. He told me he was going to be out of town and he had another part on order so if I wanted to come in when he got back to fix it all. I told my SA that I felt they did more than just "lube it" because this is when the noises started. He is once again going to talk to his service manager. We will see. |

At this point, you have nothing to lose and redepositing a uniform layer of pad material on the rotors might stop the squealing, which is might be resonance caused by an uneven/uncomplete bedding in when you got the car. Good luck!
