Ambient lighting... Increase brightness possibility?

Hi Guy,

i have noticed that coding is actually a lot more impressive than i initially though!

Rotary rasp, has figured out how to up the Voltage to the stock bulb angel eyes and increase their visibility!

This is great news for people running bulbs...

So what about the interior ambient lighting? Even when the dash lights are set to their max, they are still terribly dim...

Has any one or willing to find out how to up the power on them slightly so they are a little brighter? This would be a great mod that could improve in the inteior ambience very nicely...

This is a little too bright, but if something a little less achievable...

Haven't seen anything really related into interior bulbs actually.
And upping bulb voltages for not only angel eyes has existed for a while

I know you say you havent come across anything specific to interior bulbs...

BUT... if you are able to code the interior bulbs and remove the cold and warm tests, maybe somewhere there is a way of upping the voltage for these specific Ambience bulbs?

It sounds like you are talking about the gauge cluster/dashboard lights. Those are LED's behind there (according to the manual).

Keep in mind that providing higher voltage to any bulb (including angel eyes) will increase its heat output, possibly leading to melting of the area around the bulb. It will also cause the wires to run hotter than intended which can melt/burn wires and the surrounding area, it can melt the bulb socket, or blow fuses.

It will also cause premature wear on the bulb itself and cause it to die sooner than usual.

hmmm i think i am going to prematurely give up on the ambience lighting...

zzzz you are right... i am sure, EVEN if there is possibility to code the ambience lighting which is directly linked to the gauge brightness... The last thing i want to do is blow bulbs behind the dash... But if it was possible to increase the brightness of the ambience door lighting separately, it would have been worth while.

I was thinking about doing the same. I like the overhead lamp brighter, but I have my gauges low.
Perhaps a re-wire to a different, un-dimmed source?

...or switch to LED bulbs. Don't go to the blue xenon-gas bulbs, they'll melt the housing unfortunately.

Hmmm interesting. They make a brighter led one for the single amber flood? Got a link?

i see it now, i thought you were talking about the overhead lighting. didn't even know about the ambient lighting on the doors... wish my e90 had that though.

Dont think there is a way unfortunately...
There is no way of making them brighter individually with coding as you may blow the leds behind the gauges on the dash as they are interlinked.

So unless you retrofit your own leds and wire them in separately... i dont think there is much hope.

You could get brighter LEDs to replace the bulbs.

Don't think you can code a higher voltage - don't see any parameters there.

I saw one guy last month on german speedway that modified his interior ambient lightning, he did dis modified some wirings and put additional +2v from somewhere and his ambients was really bright almos like in new S-class Merc, but he didnt want to tell how he did it just mention about wirings and additional voltage

Maybe i can change it to custom value - higher... ?

I think it depends on roof and legs light theh can be increased a bit , dont think it will go with ambient but worth a try!

Crazy late bump?

Any update on this? noticed my lighting just wasn't bright enough today... Its adjustable on my dads 7 series, but doesn't seem to make a difference when i adjust the dash options.

I have a LED from the interior door ambient lighting here and also noticed the light as quite dark. I decided to open the LED to see what exactly is inside. Here it is. I think it should be possible to replace the SMD / LED and the resistance with a brigther combination. The only thing is to find the correct BMW orange/amber color level. I found out that the wavelength of the SMD / LED shoud be between 605nm and 610nm to match exactly with the original BMW orange/amber interior light.
