Just imagine the liability issues.... While switching off DSC/DTC for serious performance driving is fine, on a non-dedicated track car for daily use, I would allways want a fully operational (switchable for moments of fun) DSC. You cannot allways foresee what´s coming up and in certain situations DSC really can be a life saver. So I guess i really need an M3

My mom and i both picked up e90s about a month ago, Mine is a 6 speed 330i and hers is a 330Xi Automatic. I did a diff swap in my 330Ci and loved it. I am thinking about taking my moms car for the day and swapping My 3.15 into her car and taking her 3.64 and putting it to my car. I wonder how much slower her car would be with a 3.15... at lease she will get better gas mileage. Will this affect the X drive taking her diff or no? anyone?
Thanks.~ |

You can put her diff in your car allright. But put yours in her car and all hell will brake loose. She´ll have a different final drive on the rear wheels than the front which means the central diff will be running unequal speeds at the two outputs, will wear like hell, the X-Drive electronics will be in "WTF-mode", the brakes will be applied by X-drive to slow down the "slipping" wheels etc. In short, that´s one helluva expensive mod. Besides, the diffs will probably not fit anyway. You might have to shorten drive shafts etc. to make them fit.

Now that I'm starting to get some miles on my xi, I'm getting more and more appreciation for how it is set up right now. Wow. I'm still breaking in, so I'm not pushing too hard...yet. Went out last night for some break in miles and found a great road. It's either me or the shifting is getting better. It just keeps getting better... CM

I think the perfect combo would be a 2.93 diff with a Supercharger on the I6 pushing 320hp. 2nd gear would be a beast, like in the MINI 2nd gear 70 MPH

Wow this is a very interesting post. We got some high rollers going back and forth. Still, I find myself confused with all this numbers and formula getting tossed around. Maybe I should just stick with my stock setup. But very interesting to see what people have done or consider doing to their $37K-$44K cars. I am still paying off the car notes.

On the other hand, putting a NO SLIP differential WILL affect traction control... the computer can't tell a wheel to move independently... info courtesy of TurnerMotorSports when i asked them about the OS Giken 3.64:1 LSRD (the one they sell is for M3, but they can special order one for other models) OS Giken Super Lock (adjustable differential) for E90 N52 based engines |

Why not hit up Dan at www.diffsonline.com IMO the most knowlegeable shop when it comes to BMW drivetrain.
He does nothing but custom gearing and LSDs for BMWs. |

Massive thread revival!
Will the computer recognize its running a different gear ratio after swaping the differential with say, a higher gear ratio? Or, does the car need to be coded?

When I swapped my diff for diff with 3.46 ratio my BC was showing to shift up when I was in sixth gear. After a while it adopted itself and it doesn’t do it anymore.
