Lively debate, think I need to go and drive one. Been checking them out on the motorway and they have a good stance, but defo older drivers- but businessmen, not old fogies.

I do know a guy who just got one and is in his mid-30s..... family discount may have helped sway the decision though.

Try one, they handle well for their size. The standard kit great too especially the Bowers & Wilkins stereo on the Portfolio model.

The mondeo chassis was also very good, and the X-types I have driven were very good, fluid handling cars - certainly not "sporty", but not trying to be. Odd thing image, if only they had realised the X-type first, and then said the mondeo was based on it ...... D.

Still at least Jaguar provide extended leather as standard even if one of the choices is brown (truffle)

Paul, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of posters supporting the "old man's car" line in this thread probably would regard you as an old man anyway - so the answer is, "yes it is, big fooking deal".

It is interesting to note that those who do not think the XF is an old man's have put up substantiated arguements. on the other hand there has only been throw away biased comments from those who think it is an old man's car. Come on guys you can do better that.

Lively debate but in a lot of cases missing the point. The XF is undoubtably a good car but I think the question was is it an old man's car? The problem Jaguar have IMHO is that Jags still have the old man image. At work we have a director, late 50s, perma tan, shades and drives an XF. To the OP, I would buy the car if you like it as a car. if you had asked my in my teens what I thought of BMWs I would have said 'prats car, never, ever drive one', I am now about to take delivery of my third!! Manufacturers spend millions on the image of their cars and in some cases it works e.g. Skoda. The problem that Jaguar have, along with Honda is the people that buy them. Sweeping generalisation I know but for a lot of people a BMW is for when your on the way up, a Merc is for when you've made it and a Jag is for you when you are on the way out Doesn't stop it being a good car but for a lot of people, myself included, that is its current image.

Aha, a decent response in defence of old man tag! Thanks You have picked on the "Brand" issue I pointed out earlier, and I have to agree that the Jaguar brand does have an older drive image due to recent mismanagement. The question is will the XF, new XJ, new two seat roadster and the replacement x-type change the Brand image over time with the new modern looks?

I guess it is a matter of perception. One thing that occurs to me is that the membership on this forum is not particularly representative of the entire population - to wit, the percentage of young people (let's say under 30) in the entire country, who can spend £20k plus on a car is much smaller than the percentage of young people on this board who have done just that.
In the country as a whole then, it follows that the percentage age of people who do buy Jags will be older than our defined young people because, for the majority of the country, it takes years to develop far enough that money for a Jag becomes available - over and above mortgage, bringing up children and all the rest of the costs incurred in leading a traditional life. Consequently, it then appears that a Jag is an older man's car. Mind you, when I was young I thought of a Jag as a rich man's car (or at least well-off) but by definition, typically, the people with some money were older. This was before the yuppy days of the '80s and '90s which, obviously, a lot of you will not have experienced. So, the younger members will have inherited the perception that old men drive Jags, not realising that when this image developed, they were the only ones who could afford them. Had the internet existed in the mid seventies, if this forum had existed, there would have been virtually no younger members on it, and those who were would have been merely spectators. I fail to see how the interior of a XF can be regarded as old mannish. There is no need for wood, there's plenty of aluminium and gadgets and the entire interior is so much better than a BMW (and I am comparing it to it's proper rival, the 5 series - and it still beats the new one.) I'll ask one more question. Using the approach of our critics, I presume a Bentley Arnage, a Silver Ghost, or a DB9 must all be old man's cars as well? |

Good post AlanQS.
It will be interesting to see if Jaguar can attract a younger buyer with the new smaller models in the pipeline.
