Why are the BBK kits so expensive?

I guess I should start out first by asking if there are any in the <2k range?

I'm used to the Audi world where there are Porsche spec'd kits down in the $1400-1500 range.

UUC's is close to the 2k mark, but are there any others that I'm missing?

No. Read a couple of the prior BBK threads.

Actually, my memory was off by a couple hundred, or those where introductory pricing I remember from the Audi days.

But check out what Audi guys get to enjoy.

http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...CS%20Stage%204

Stage 4 is a Cayenne caliper, Stage 3 is a "big red" aka 993TT caliper.

I'm thinking there's an assload of profit built into BBK kits; they seem to me to just be off the shelf calipers with a 2 piece rotor of the correct diameter, proper center bore and lug spacing and then a custom mounting bracket. > 2k for just the front seems like an awful big rip off.

Or maybe I'm just cheap like that?

I always thought brake kits were over priced too but I'm cheap like that also...haha
It's not just these cars that are bad. My last car was a 350Z and most kits were in the $3k-$4k range.
I'd love to do a BBK but for me it's very cost prohibitive. If it was a track car maybe.

Not my thing either. The brakes on the car work great as is. Why spend when you can buy other mods.

I`ve been away since Mon and have done 1600 mls this week in my car since fitting BBK end of last week. This morning I got in Tracys 118d and almost crashed at the bottom of my road (the brakes felt non-existent) Honestly guys I`m not exaggerating, I didn`t realise how much of a difference they actually made, I braked this morning with what felt like the same force and the car just kept going and going, Tracy had to shout stop. Def. a lot of money but in my opinion the best mod I have done.

I agree that all the BMW applications are currently overpriced. I would love to have the ECS solutions for BMW. They have a long reputation for offering great packages for front and rear BBK's that dont require you to bend over to play. The closest option for us is the UUC, but for $100 less, Id rather have P/brembo calipers and the better rotors ECS offers.

BBK manufactured by companies such as Brembo and AP Racing are expensive because hands down THEY WORK! If you have ever driven in a car with these brakes on them, and mind you, I personally have, you will see that you get your $$$ worth. However, there is a small sub note to this, now are certain BBK useful for the street, the answer is no. Why? It depends on the brake pads that are used in the big brake kit. Why are the brake pads important? Because with a lot of these BBK, they sometimes only use brake pads that operate under a high temperature, temparatures that are typically not met on the street. These pads are usually called "FOR TRACK USE ONLY" and they really mean it!

So yes, BBK are gonna be expensive. Why? If they dont stop your car, you're gonna have a whole lot for $$$ to pay out to the guy you hit if you dont stop! Think about that!

personally, i dont see the need for a BBK for a daily driver, the bmw break system is tight as it is, it clamps better than any other car on the road lol

anyways, its more for looks than for pratical use

still doesnt explain why a Porsche/brembo setup can be well under $2000, yet a similar kit direct from brembo is $3200. Simple markup.

Yeah ... that was my point more than arguing if a BBK was necessary or not.

Thats a whole different discussion in itself.

YES they are worth it for several reasons.

NO they are not worth it if you are paying for something you dont necessarily use to its fullest.

Depends on what you get. Not necessarily. If you buy a 4 wheel Alcon brake kit from StaSIS engineering (for Audi), a Brembo 4 wheel kit, or a Stoptech 4 wheel kit they take into consideration brake bias and it will most likely still be very effective. I opted for a 355m Stoptech kit on my Audi..and it stops real good..retail was $2595 for that "front only" kit. To be honest..I wouldnt take any "stock" 328/335 or any Audi on the track without doing some type of upgrade.

how much are oem brake kits? i think in order to guage this we also have to compare how much BMW would sell a set of brakes for... if its about 1.5, for a set on front... i wudn't be so surprised to see 2-2.5k for a set from brembo, etc

For most applications, BBK's will usually just prevent brake fade and not do much at all over stock in terms of actual braking power.
