Just bought 2007 335i on Monday...need recommendations

Hello all...

First post...New to the forum.

Just bought a metallic Black/Black 2007 335i. All options other than NAV. CPO car. So far it has been a fun drive other than the brake squeking issue that many experience, and some driver seat squeak. My 2nd BMW. First was an E46 323ci which I had modded at Active Autowerke.

I would like to purchase more mods from them again, but from my research over the last few days, it looks like you have to take all mods off before you take it in to get serviced which I never had to do with my E46.

I wanted intake, exhaust, tune, intercooler, ecu, but that may be too much to switch back and forth all the time.

Is Dinan the only safe way to go these days without worrying everytime you take it in??

Sucks as I always loved AA's product, fit, and finish.

What should a stock 335i sedan-steptronic with sport run in the quarter stock vs. Dinan Intake/Tune/Exhaust vs. AA??

First mod should be a tune! Best bang for your buck mod possible!

I just got mY 07 E92 about 2 weeks ago and from the little bit of time I have been on the forums I've seen the tune to be the biggest bang for the buck along with a basic dual cone intake. My car is not a CPO so I don't have the worries of taking mods off for service but I will after I buy a after market warranty. From the limited research I have done shows tune, intake and exhaust will prove the most gains but thats the same with almost any turbo car. The intake and a PnP tune should take less than a hour to remove to get your car serviced. I would stay away from the intercooler if you want less hassles with your CPO WARRANTY. The JB3 and PrOcede v4 seem to be the 2 tunes to choose from depending how deep down the rabbit hole you wish to go.

I purchased a 335i recently as well. I am planning to enjoy the car for a few months before getting it tuned. It's the fastest car I've ever owned from the factory and a blast to drive right out of the box.

Waiting a little bit gives you some time to get used to the drivetrain, work-out any potential bugs through warranty, and better appreciate the tune when you finally do get it. Like getting a new car again after a few months.

Tune -> intercooler -> down pipes -> meth (if you get that intake is a must) -> Best of bleed intake (Dinan CAI). I put my money where my mouth is.

There is no correct order, and I dont know why everyone puts meth last.

Meth adds the most power, and has the most bang for the buck (aside from a tune).

It also adds in safety/cooling and the ability to add boost and ignition.

2nd to that is intercooler, it lets the turbos work less, and thus more efficiently. By no accident it lowers IAT and keeps them in check.

After that I would consider downpipes...

As far as mods, I know what I want. Just don't know if I should go with AA or Dinan. I am not mechanically savvy or tech savvy, so I will not be pulling apart my ECU to add a JB3. I could do very simple things like installing an intake, but I don't want to touch electronics.

The dilemma for me would be for instance if I take a road trip, and I have some engine issues come up, I can't send it right to a dealership.

Any dealerships mod friendly in Miami?

U bought the wrong car if u are worried. I am one of the worried folk, so welcome!

I see people with brand new 50K 335is MY2011 buy the car and are practically installing a JB3 or Procede down the street from the dealership. Such mettle!

I too fear that something could go wrong on a road trip and I will be completely shit out of luck. To that, the modders argue that the tunes are safe and reliable. Understood, but for some reason, I can't get over the fact that if these motors were so capable, why did bmw "under-engineer" the car? I understand certain aspects, like intercooler tubing and other physical items, that are designed poorly because they are aimed to keep costs down, and profits up.

The procede looks like the most technologically advanced. THe JB3 looks like the most bang for the buck. I think the procede would get my money just because there are SO many features on that device. And they are constantly releasing new updates. I haven't been in a JB3 car in a long time, but was told by a very good source, that they have improved ALOT. JB products are also very price friendly. The procede is practically 1,000 bucks, thats alot. But they always say, "You pay for what you get".

The real question that would put me more at ease would be if I purchased mods from a tuner like AA, would the take off mods-reinstall stock items/clear codes on my car and remove my exhaust every time I need to take it in to service free of charge?

I heard DP's are a big no-no when it comes to BMW SA's, and voiding warranty's.

Again, I am new to this, but that is what I gather through reading through the forums.

if you aren't worried about the cost. Don't worry about the warrenty. Having said that, Dinan makes amazing products, but you could do a number of repairs with the money you save buying more reasonably priced stuff from other manufacturers (AR Design, Vishnu, AMS, etc) that are all VERY high quality.

All to a point. I'm not worried about paying $2,000 for a tune. I AM worried about paying $14,000 for a new engine. Plus, I went out of my way to buy a CPO car from a dealer as opposed to buying private sale. CPO alone probably cost me $3,000 vs. Negotiating with a private seller.

i have full bolt ons and with out a doubt get DCI and a TUNE first, that should run you no more than 500-550.00 +50.00 installed for the tune.
400-450.00 for a used JB3 and 100.00 for a new DCI and your good to go.
now if you have to pull into a dealer for any reason you can just take it to a local speedshop and have them remove the tune for no more than 50.00 or less.
as far as cost goes, how many times are you ever really going to goto the dealer before that 50.00 a tune remove/install makes a dent in your wallet?

by the way welcome to the forum

I have seen decreases in power from many DCI's. Are there any that are PROVEN to increase hp?

JB+ or Dinan would probably be your "safest" choices. Dinan is more expensive and more advanced than the Jb+ but in the end they produce very similar 1/4 mile times. You would need to buy the BT tool to delete tuner codes if you got the jb+. Dinan tune maximizes performance with reliability.

Don't think you will get that labor for free. Gonna cost you the hourly rate.
