if I were to get an used Bimmer, I would get a CPO one from the dealership, it offers you the extra peace of mind via their extended warranty program.

Do you know any "reliable" sales guy working at BMW dealership? Ask him/her to keep a look out for any "lease returned" BMW that are brought in.

I used to think lease returns were good cars. But after reading on here how some lessees treat their new cars like rented mules I don't know any more. Am I off base here?

CPO is the way to go by the way. I wouldn't buy an expensive luxury care any othe way.

you're not off base. I've read too many "this is a lease, I don't care" response here.

+1, like I said in previous postings on a different thread, if it is a good car, you will not likely to sell or return it.

Barring special circumstances like moving out of the country, affordability, or ... If you decide to sell or return the car, there must be something you do not like about the car.

However, your "reliable" CA should help you identify those that fall into the "special circumstances" category, but it could take a while (could be 3 - 6 months) before they find a "good" car.

Lease returns end up as CPO cars. A customer leasing a car is unlikely to buy there car if they can continue to lease a brand new car for the same as what they are paying. I get cars back off lease that have less than 10k on them sometimes and where just driven back and forth to the store or whatever. Then we get the ones that are disgusting which we ship off to auction.
