WTF!! Things stolen out of my car at tow yard!

So pissed right now. Spun out my car and hit a curb. Car got towed to an impound lot and was towed to my body shop. I just got my car back and now i'm missing my redline radar, 32gb ipod, Maui Jin sunglasses and all the change out of my center armrest!

Called Unitow in surrey and the manager basically says, "your car was only in our yard for 16hours overnight. i could understand if it was here for a few months" WTF!!

I called the insurance company and they basically said nothing they can do! My bodyshop is trying to get me the incoming photo's of the car when they received it.

What else can i do?

I had a similar thing happen to me with a valet. The owner of the valet company said too bad and that I shouldn't have left my stuff in my car. I kept on the company until they replaced my stuff.

Lol your adjuster said that to you? That's just bad service.

I'd talk to them, that's some serious cash. It's basically like a theft claim. I would stay on the tow co. as well...that's bs and happens all the time.

It was the adjuster. Problem was I talked to a dial-a-claim lady who did everything. After that, the car was taken straight to Bavara Auto Haus who did the estimating. I never saw an ICBC associate in person.

BUT, it sucks and that was my reaction as well. Its also not like i've done this often. I'm hitting 40, established business guy with Road Star coverage!

Wife's pissed as well. Says she will talk to the Tow company and the body shop herself and if all else fails call the TV investigative reporter to see if they can help. Its more a matter of principle now!

Who ever your insured with needs to deal with this. I highly suggest you speak to an actual PD adjuster. In my line of work we don't give ppl shit for stuff like this....

In any case, if that fails you complain to the broker and make sure he complains to the company. That always gets pushed up the ranks and you'll have better results. If you are direct insured you go to the Umbudsman.

Let us know how you fair.

Cheers,

N

That sucks alright. Too bad that stuff happens. Shame that you can't have something without somebody stealing it.
But I have to ask, if your pushing 40. Why would you leave that stuff in car? ( unless you were taken away from accident in ambulance). It's not like your were born yesterday I don't think. How many posts we see of guys getting cars broken into. What would think would happen when somebody had the key and saw stuff inside??
I don't leave my iPod in car when it's locked in driveway, let alone when car is in somebody else's hands.
Not ragging on ya. But you have to think like a crook once in awhile

Sad to say, I usually don't leave the radar in. The glasses usually comes out if im changing vehicles. The iPod I've never taken out. I've never had any of my cars broken into. But this wasn't a break in! They had my keys!

I was blocking traffic after the hit and I was in shock. Total damage was about $7k so hit was fairly hard. The car got towed within the hour so it didn't dawn on me at the time. I even left my coffee mug in.

It was my fault partially for leaving it in. Sad what the world has come to.

complaining to the adjuster/insurer? good luck, ICBC (the primary insurance company within BC) will use the excuse, the items stolen is not "bolted/secured permanently" onto the vehicle thus insurance does not cover it.

have you spoke to a lawyer on the matter? they might be ablet to give you the best advice...

something similar happened to a friend of mine and i told him to speak to a lawyer...

the lawyer paid the company one visit and they ended up paying the money back.

worth a shot.

An Ipod, pair of running shoes and a small amount of cash. The valet company finally sent me a check but I had to buy another Ipod and a new pair of shoes first which I thought was fair for them to protect themselves against fraud.

I feel you, I had the same experience, they also damaged my wheel.
I wanted to burn down their tow yard.

Uhhhh, there is coverage for contents in a vehicle regardless of them not being part of the vehicle. Theft is theft and its a consequence of the accident you had

OP, do you have home insurance? I was told by my insurer personal belongings, including those in your vehicle are only covered under home insurance. So that's one avenue to make a claim.

Speak to the ombudsman! Every insurer has one including IBC. An I'f you had additional coverage through a private carrier try that too.

Keep pushing, when there is a will there is a way. I will talk to a friend in PD tomorrow for you and determine what's the best route.

maybe ontario does things differently, but i have never once heard of anyone getting their shit that is not part of the car covered/reimbursed from theft by the insurance company

Okay so a fiend of mine confirmed that if any of your stuff had been damaged because of the accident an you were NOT at fault it would be covered as contents.

Otherwise, you need to go through your home policy.

Sorry dude, SOL ;(

That happened to my wife once in Downtown LA, they towed her car because she parked in a CVS parking lot for a couple of hours in the night, when she came out she thought they had stolen her car, but found out it had been towed. When she received her car back from towing yard, she noticed she was missing her brand new camera, all the change in her ashtray and couple of other items. They said they didn't see those items in the car and they couldn't do anything about it. She called the cops and they said they couldn't do anything because they can't prove it was them that took her things. Sucks that some tow yards are shady like that. Sorry that happened to you as well

File a complaint through cops? It certainly wont give you your stuff back; but if they repeatedly do it; they might build a case against them.
