but theres nothing wrong with the bass or subwoofer except that i've used and abused it a lot from my previous car and the coils seem to sound kinda weird, and the bass sounds fine with the music, i'm just looking to move onto a different subwoofer with no coil noise

BTW, if you're sure its your voicecoil making noise, it is possible that it is making noise because it was damaged by the faulty installation so that's even more incentive to make sure its right before you put another sub in there.

Its been installed for a few weeks now and they are a trusted place that have worked on my other car and my friends cars, we've had no issue with them whatsoever

Well, don't take this the wrong way - but if they are that good, why are you asking us?
I'm not clear on what you mean about the coils sounding weird, sorry. As a rule, voice coils only wear out by shorting, opening, or unwinding when the glue melts. If one of those things hasn't happened, the coil should sound fine. |

How old is the sub? Maybe there is something in between the coils, rubbing against the sides.

I'm guessing if there is a noise, sub is either blown and the VC is out of the gap or he's hearing something else. This problem wouldn't be subtle though. It would be very obvious and you probably wouldn't even want to leave it connected to the system.

If you plug in an iPod with a headphone to RCA adapter, right into the amp, that would serve as a good reference for how the woofer sounds (compared to the in-car hookup).

Well max watts are definelty not anything to go by the max on cheap amps is sometimes 3 to 4 times higher than what the RMS is if you noticed most namebrand companies dont even list max wattage. Also if you could measure your box external dimensions will work if you let us know how thick the material it is made out of is we could find out the volume and better reccomend a new subwoofer.

So whatcha gonna do?
If you asked me, take that sub to a shop and have them hook it up to one of the demo amps. If the sub is good, then your amp is toast (toasted crap, LOL) but I would say get a new amp regardless.

FYI I have two 12" CVRs in my e90 and the bass is more than sufficient for any type of music. It's being pushed by a JL Audio 500w mono amp. Subs are in ported box each chamber about 1.5CuFt. Inline processing handled by Audio Control The Epicenter and also Audio Control EQS. Head unit Kenwood KIV 700 total dbs i'd say easy 140. If harder hitting bass is what your after I recommend putting 2 subs.
Does your car have a ski pass for bass to come into the cabin of the car or is your trunk completely sealed off from the cabin? You'd be amazed how much an improvement in bass a tiny opening from trunk to cabin will make. If your coils are going bad and rubbing on the inside then kiss those subs goodbye. I had similar experience a while back with Fosgates til one day smoked them. |
