Running in - Fact or Fable
So what's the general view amongst the members?
Rag the arse off it or pamper it like a mistress. I was advised by an Audi engineer many years ago, that if you drove it like it was stolen from day one, it would always outperform a car of the same spec that had been run in as per the manual. And...................................... |

im with the audi engineer on this one
and one thing to bear in mind if you do want to run in like a granny, the car has already been redlined by staff at the docks, and by some one at the dealership your car may only have 4 miles on her when you take delivery, trust me there were 4 miles of high revs there rendering the running in process pointless Carlos

I pretty much followed the manual (not 100% but more or less) - they put it in for a reason. It isn't just about the engine it is the whole car meshing together. I thought I read somewhere that some parts are actually made so they DON'T fit then fit together as you run it in....... With beemer diesels you don't really have to push that hard to go fast anyway so there was enough learning/fun to be had and within a short period of time I'd done a few long runs and there I was at the run-in.

I gave mine stick from day 1 (has now covered 2500 miles).
I always let it warm up properly, didn't sit on the limiter or, likewise, labour it. Other than that, it received full throttle and upper-end revs form day one, and is running beautifully. I did the same with the Subaru i got rid of to make way for the bimmer, and that managed 3 years and 90k miles (including a lot of track time) without missing a beat, as did my golf gti before that. If there is a good case for running a car in (or rather, a case against not running it in) I'm yet to see it proven.

Yep I am the same. Drive it normally from day 1 (let it warm up and then redline it - as and when i have the chance)

dont thrash it, the pistons are not a pefect fit untill there warmed up. also the oil is thick and not quick enough to circulate, damage logn term will be done from thrashing from cold. its funny tho some people wait for water to be upto temp, but the oil always takes longer some peole dont realise this..
but we dont have any temp gauges on our cars so we cant check i would dayafter 10 miles the oil would be upto temp

Blackadder got this right when he said (something like)...
"Treat your car like you treat your woman... Get inside her five times a day and take her to Heaven and back."
