ECU fan removal
I am posting my questions again since I didn't get an answer before:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285872 I am trying to get rid of all strange noises and rattles in my car and my ECU fan is something I need to replace as it really makes too much noise. Could anybody tell me please on which side of the firewall the ECU fan is ? Should I start removing parts from the inside of the car or from the engine bay ? Thanks. |

I think you sent me a message on this but I forgot to return a message back. There are 2 screws that hold the fan on to the firewall and you need to get to it from the inside of the car. Nothing needs to be done from the engine compartment. I used a couple of very long extensions with a U joint flexible adapter, and I'm pretty sure it's a T20 torx socket. You have to go through the sea of wires, but it's doable. Good luck. Did you read this thread? http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...2536&highlight

Is the fan behind the fuse box ? Do I have to remove it or is it better to start from the footwell ? |

You don't have to remove it but it would be easier to get to. I didn't.

Anyway I got it out yesterday but it looked fine. I hoped to find something causing the noise but no luck. I am wondering if I order a new one from BMW will it be a new/silent version ??? Did they change anything or will I end up with two noisy ECU fans ? |

Turn the fan around and see if you hear a noise. Also, check in the hole (where the fan bolts on to the firewall) to see if anything is in there.

I even let it run for a few minutes keeping it in my hand and it was as noisy as before removing. It makes me think that either this is the way it should work (which I doubt) or there is a new model available from BMW which is not that noisy. Is your ECU fan completely silent when the radio is muted ? |

When I first bought the car, I heard a fan noise which I thought was the radiator fan going full blast. Stopped the car and looked under the hood....but it wasn't. After reading on the forums, came to realize it was the ECU fan. It's loud enough to notice if you have everything else turned off and it seems to come on quite frequently in hotter weather. So I think it's a normal sound you just get used to, but certainly something that catches your attention when all else is quiet. Kind of like that turbo whine...lol. Unless it's screeching, don't let it worry you.....if you hear it then it's doing it's job. Problem is, that the heat from the ECU gets vented into the passenger compartment.....oh don't get me going....just another thing to complain about. |

It's a bit annoying but I can get used to it. I don't want to spend money on the new one if it is the same. Well, nothing is perfect |

I need to take care of all issues myself, but this is not the biggest one, so I can live with it. I think it has been a bit better since I removed it and installed again. I did nothing but the noise is more like a fan noise now rather than strange noise I couldn't really describe before. |

To give the fan noise a frame of reference, it sounds exactly like the fan on a home computer does because that's pretty much what it is.
You can hear it, but it's not intrusive once you get used to it. |

I have exactly same problem too. I took my 2008 E92 328 to the dealer and they replaced the ecu fan and it still makes noise. My friend have 2007 E92 and he said he never heard ecu fan noise.

The dealer replaced both my turbos because they were whining slightly and the new ones make the same noise. But I'm still on the original ECU fan though....lol Always fun to bring dead threads back to life! |

I just try to drill in my head near the passenger footwell and can barely see the fan which is just covered by a bunch of electrical wires. The gap is so tight that it will be very difficult to get the fan out of the way. But I cannot see the plug of the fan even if you can unscrew it how could you manage to unplug it?? |
