Rear diff fluid change

I am hoping to change the rear differential fluid over the weekend. I believe the capacity is 1.2 litre.

Hopefully all 1.2 litres comes out when I drain it. Question, if only 1L comes out, shall i refill it with 1L of new fluid or shall i still put in 1.2L?

I believe, regardless of how much fluid comes out, you add fresh fluid until it starts flowing back out the fill hole. And if I recall correctly, there is only one hole from which you drain /fill. Look it up on YouTube, there's a diy video that Sean made.

Check out this DIY: http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...eplacement.htm

Easiest way is to suck the fluid out of the same hole you will be using to fill it back up. As mentioned above, you cannot overfill the differential because the oil starts coming out of the same hole you are using to fill it up.

OP, there is no drain on the new BMW diffs. You need a pneumatic fluid extractor (either hand operated or shop air) that will suck out all the old diff oil. There are several companies that sell hand operated extractors, buy one for this procedure; you will not be able to get the oil out any other way.

If you use an air powered brake vac, you will probably get 99% of the oil out. If not, good luck

Look into a mitivac

Thanks.

For those who have changed the fluid, did you manage to extract all 1.2 litres of the old fluid?

I've done mine 3 times on the E90, and once on the Z4. I get all oil out using a fluid extractor. I modified one of the brass tube extractor tubes to a short 90 deg. bend that fits in the fill plug and reaches the inside bottom of the diff. But as others have said, getting most of the oil out is good enough.

I'm getting ready to do this in the next several weeks. Do I need to buy 2 liters of new fluid since it takes 1.2 liters? What fluids are you using? Red Line? BMW? Valvoline?

Unless you personally installed an LSD, then no e90 has one from the factory unless you have an M3.

I do not have LSD, so I am going to use two bottles of Mag 1 full synthetic 75w90 gear oil I have left over from a case I purchased for other vehicles.

2011 e90 335i - surprised it doesn't have an LSD. Is there any way to verify this for certain? (Not denying what you posted at all, good sir!)

Also, what's the word on purchasing 1 or 2 liters???

If you become an amsoil member, you will get 25% off their products. Also, their website will specify exactly how much fluid you need per application (differential, trans, power steering, etc.)

If your changing the rear diff fluid, I'd want an air powered brake vac, and fluid pump of some sorts to put the new fluid in and about 2 quarts of 75w-90 gear oil .

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=SVGQT-EA

Trust me. I own a 335i and have for 10 years. I don't have an LSD rear differential. If the 335 does not have an LSD, a 328 should as heck won't.

Only M cars have them from the factory.

I guess the best way to verify this, if you really need to do that, would be to talk to a BMW dealership parts manager.

Unless a previous owner added an LSD, you do not have one. Get two liters of oil because it is better to have too much rather than not enough.
