Norcal should be the best bet for you and your wife.... Norcal becoz Medical fields is still big in there and also Advertising & PR field is much more alive in Norcal...

Hey Man,

The Medical field is prominent down here in SOCAL as much as it is up north. I know some people that have moved to SoCal because jobs were harder to find up there, depending on what career you're into. Living expenses are a lot more expensive up north as well.

Moving from Michigan... SoCal would be the best move by far. The weather, the people, and mostly a much better place to rock that e92. But I agree with everyone though, visit both so you can get your own impressions.

1800 is a good budget, you shouldn't have trouble finding an apt anywhere in norcal or socal (i'm assuming 1 bedroom apt for you and your gf) and yes norcal is a lot more mellow than socal

the vibes are the different the people are different and the scenery is completely different. the suburbs out here arent too expensive

But....one thing's for sure, food is much better in the bay area.
That's the one thing I miss the most out of SF.
For $1800 you can get a nice apt around the SD La Jolla area and it's really nice there plus you are close to the medical industry.

Good luck with the move, I moved out to the bay area about a year and a half ago and really enjoy it. I can't get enough of the awesome weather (South Bay), plenty of things to do and things to see. Only thing I haven't gotten used to is housing prices and what you actually get for your money, once you get that squared away the cost of living isn't that bad.

I have only visited SOCAL extensively, but from friends that have made the move, they tell me it's a bit easier to afford a reasonably sized home and to raise a family as the housing cost is less, and there is just more space in general. Traffic can be awful, but there are tons of areas to explore, where NORCAL feels like a smaller place.

I have been living in San Francisco for the last 15 years, and I feel that it's all about the tech industry out here. Housing costs are very expensive, especially in certain areas like the Peninsula (Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mtn View) and San Francisco City Proper. I personally like the vibe that the industry brings to the area. Example: Rent for a 1 br in San Francisco starts at around $2,100/month but for something bigger and nicer, expect costs closer to 2700 - 3000/ Month. What I do find unique about San Francisco is that at one minute you can be in a great metropolitan city and with a quick ride over the Golden Gate Bridge you have some of the most beautiful forests and mountains. I am big into the outdoors, so the accessibility to nature and city is a big plus for me. Also I am in Tech, which makes San Francisco the best place on earth for my career.

Also look into Kaiser for jobs. They are everywhere in Cali.

Norcal! But I'm biased. I visit LA a few times a year and it's definitely a different atmosphere. Hate the traffic, but there is never a shortage of what to do. But hey, you can't go wrong either way. I live in Sacramento, 1 1/2 hour drive east and I'm snowboarding in squaw valley/ lake tahoe/ truckee. 1/12 hour drive west and I'm at the beach in the bay area. And it's nice here on a day to day basis. The commute to work in the morning is filled with traffic, so I ride my motorcycle to work year round. Not too cold, not extremely hot either.
