Wider Tyres?

Hi Everyone,

I have 8.5j wheels (front) and 9.5j wheels (rear).

Fronts have a 225/35/19 tyre, rears have a 255/30/19.

Would I see much difference if I changed to wider tyres?

Was thinking 235 front and 265 rear?

Thanks

If you were doing hot laps of a track probably.
Normal road diving? Probably not.

I have the same width wheels and the same width tyres. No issues here!

It's debatable. You have a wider tyre with more contact area across the tyre. Some people claim the contact patch length wise can shorten as a result, so ending up with the same size contact patch. If the contact area does increase then there's less pressure exerted down on any area of that rubber. As we know if you have less pressure, it's easier to spin or skid.

I however do run 235s front and 265s rear. My 235s are actually closer in size to 245s though.

In drag racing wider tyres always perform better for straight line acceleration. On the road I don't think you'll notice any difference at all by the very small increase.

Would I be right in thinking it's OK to go 235/265 on MV4s despite recommended sizes being 225/255?

I've had the car for about 7 years now and tried different tyres sizes and drive with TC fully off. For me,I can definitely tell there is improved front end grip when i went from 225 to 235.

It's logical, that when you go wider, more contact with the road eventually more grip.

I drove my brother's c63 amg, and the tyres at the rear are only 255 and rear grip is FUCKING SHIT. A car that powerful shouldn't have such narrow tyres at the rear and I would challenge the AMG R&D! Most likely, because of all the marketing bollocks and wanting to increase RWD "fun".

My previous car had no ABS and rather narrow tyres - 185/65 - 15. Braking in the wet was awful as front wheels would lose grip too easily. Also there is a road I used to travel on every day that had many bends. Normally I'd go round those bends at 60mph but sometimes I'd get into a "chase" and go faster in order to keep up with the car in front of me. And at about 65mph the car would start losing grip. Then I changed to wider tyres - 195/60 - 15. The difference was huge. Braking in the wet was loads better and I could corner those bends at 70mph.

Stamp the brakes in a car without ABS and you can find yourself up shit creek very quickly.

You won't, I don't drive there anymore... but even when I did I only did it a couple of times. Usually I stuck to the 60mph limit.
