have I bought a lemon???

Went to my local indie today to get my red hose oil leak fixed on the 335D. Its sorted now however found a load more issues while he was checking it over. There are oil leaks from the radial shaft seal of engine, intake manifold seals leaking. Power steering fluid has a leak. And to top it all off the transmission sump is leaking as well. Anyone have any idea how much this could all end up costing roughly. Or anyone with any similar problems with easy fixes, let me know. Would be very grateful for the advice.

Where abouts are you?

Sounds like a sick car. Given its a 335D Its worth sticking with though. Do you trust your indie? To be honest with a Car with those problems I would take to a dealer, ex-dealer trained tech (I know of a good one north London) or a specialist (not indie) like A1BN.

Yeah he's very good. I'm in Derbyshire mate he's called BMWMAN in Heanor a very well respected specialist. It has high mileage so he said these things going wrong are pretty normal. And I'd rather keep it going than scrap it and waste money on a boring new car lol. I'm hoping the oil leaks will be relatively cheap to sort out, it's the gearbox that's a bit worrying

He said it's the plastic sump on the gearbox's that tend to warp over time thus causing the leak. So maybe an oil change and new sump and seals will cure this problem hopefully. I've not noticed any jerking or harsh changing but he said it will eventually, it's just a matter of time. As for the other oil leaks I'm hoping as I said they're pretty straight forward. If anyone else has any experience I'd be happy to listen to your stories

all mentioned leaks are e9x diesel well-know problems for pre-lci cars
congested or not working crankshaft ventilation system push oil from engine weak points
automatic transmission have plastic pan(can be damaged on pothole) and mechatronic wire connector is defective

Well that's put my mind slightly at ease if they are relatively common problems. He said it's not like the car is gonna blow up at any point lol. But to get these jobs done over the next 6 months or so. Ain't gonna do em all at once though. Prob won't see much change from 1k if I did.

Hey matt, sorry to here about your problems bud

Having had my 335i for 4 years & owned bmws since 1996, all of them regularly needed money spending on them, If it's not mods it will be service items, rear tyres, brakes or something will go wrong, again

Just get a couple of quotes, find out how much it's going to cost if it's under £500 not so bad, if it's a lot more, depending on what you paid for it consider if you really want a 335 but don't think, I will just get this fixed then surely nothing else will go wrong

Bear in mind yours has done 175k & with all the work that you've said has previously been done it's got a history of going wrong , I don't mean that as a dis I just mean like most of these cars there will always be something.

But when everything's ok, which generally is most of the time & you are on the right bit of road there's nothing puts a smile on your face like a powerful BMW & for me that's why I will always have a bm.
You just need to think whether or not you want to make that kind of commitment

You need to think of them like women there's always something they want or need, & it's not usually cheap but a good one will keep you happy

Btw did you get that brake sensor sorted?

I hear you mate, thanks for the tip. Yeah im gonna get a few bits done at a time so its not all in one big hit. Wont notice it as much then lol. No the brake sensor isnt sorted yet, least of my worries now at the moment though. Thought it was relatively ok at first glance, its not until you take it to someone who knows what hes doing that you realize its knackered. Should have been more careful really, im gonna keep it running though. Cosmetically its perfect and its had too much spent on it recently to just throw in the towel now.

If I can get to it I will. I work a lot of weekends though so might not be able to. It still feels pretty damn fast for saying it's got all these things wrong with it. Which is a good sign I suppose

they don't sound like costly problems to fix.

swirl flaps could be leaking from the manifold isn't really expensive probably about £100-£150 for fit blanks with new seals and id say you can get your transmission serviced for around £300 with new sump filter and oil

Hi OP,
I'm down near Belper. It's good to hear there is an expert in Heanor as I've been going up to Stockport for most BMW work that isn't something like an Oil change or MOT.

My transmission sump pan warped and leaked but it is apparently very common on the DCT box. The whole fix was something like £350 as it needed 6 litres of transmission oil at about £22 a litre. The labor is draining, refilling and re-calibrating. Parts were a filter, sump pan, 13 bolts (I think). As far as I know the AT trans fluid is cheaper.

Doesn't sound like you have major issues and those 335D's are awesome to drive. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies guys it's good to know that these problems are relatively straightforward. Your right its a hoot to drive so much torque and power. I'd definitely recommend BMWMAN, you've only got to check out their Facebook page to know they are very well respected with brilliant reviews. While I was there yesterday 6 people came in for services and repairs and they all said the same thing, they wouldn't go anywhere else. Has a lot of m cars go through his garage as well. He clearly knows what he's doing. He even did me a detailed printout as the car is new to me to what needs doing soon. Super helpful.

just found out that the previous owner had a gearbox oil change done in January of this year. Something is fishy here, I have a receipt for the work as well lol. They obviously didn't do the job right, would it be worth getting in touch with them at all?

Always worth speaking with previous owner or garage that has carried out work if possible

Nothing to lose! I'd still contact them as they could well have cocked up.

No chance that they've just done a messy job and not wiped down the pan?

If you can get access to it maybe you can wipe it clean and see if it get's covered in fluid again. Hopefully they replaced the gasket with a new one.

Well I've just emailed the garage in question they are called np autos never heard of them personally. They informed me they changed the gasket, sump seals and oil on the 26th Jan this year. Something is not right, I'm guessing they didn't do the job properly. I suppose there's not much I can do though now because I didn't pay for the work. They've asked me to send some pictures, is there anywhere else it can leak from other than the sump itself

Is your box oily all round or just the back end? If back end only with top pats dirty as well, it might be the mechatronic sealing sleeve that is leaking and not the pan itself.

Had mine fixed for 50€ last week (need to drain the box and take off the oil pan to access it, then just put it back together and fill up with the old oil).
