he was talking about the adaptive part... the car adapts to how you drive it and when you disconnect the battery for a while, it resets this feature so the car re-learns.

ECU re-learning does NOT:
- increase / reduce the power output as far as I can tell, I am not sure what the ECU actually modifies to "learn" the driving habits
This Tune does:
- increase the power - again I don't know what this is modifying but maybe it is different from what the ECU will try and relearn.

However, it is POSSIBLE that whatever the ECU does to re-learn may cancel out the effect of the tune.

I am concerned that while they would be happy to do a reflash for you if the tune goes away, it would become a hassle if it does go away. (Disconnecting the battery for 30 mins is still a hassle )

I am not sure what the learning period is, but would they be into dynoing your car again after some period of time, just as an assurance?

Maybe I'm asking for too much, maybe I'm asking the right thing, maybe I'm not even on the right track...

Thanks again for stepping up to do this, both to you and Tony.

BTW the deposit for remote flash is 2k

Could be the placebo effect but it does make sense. This is not a signal intercept like the procede, jb3 or sstt or anything, it literally CHANGES the maps that are in the ECU.

I'd have to verify with tony but i believe that is what is going on here.
What Ben said is correct. The Adaptive part is based of a certain ECU map. When you pick your car up off the lot at the dealership, it doesn't know how you drive so it "learns". This is the same case with tuning the ECU, you are resetting the adaptive part when you install the flash so actually, that part of it would be just a hair on the more conservative side also since its relearning that you like to drive it hard. Your actual power won't necessarily increase (its not like your going to gain 10hp or anything) just because you drive the car hard... but it will probably just feel more responsive and MAYBE add 1hp on a dyno.

In any case like Ben said, it will be learning off of the NEW tuned ECU maps so actually, it'd be more likely to go up than down or stay the same, especially if you are driving the car a little harder after the flash is installed.

Tony did mention getting me back up on a dyno again sometime next month as a follow up, however I'm almost positive that if I drove the car like a grandma for the next month, I'd still hit the same numbers I put down right after the flash if not a hair better.

Is there any sort of guarantee that this won't show up under service? I don't really see that outlined in the update post at the beginning. A lot of us can't afford to risk losing our warranty.

Well it is a risk but only if they find out... I think that is assumed when doing ANY performance mod. However like I explained a few times, this tune is invisible to the computer (this isn't like SSTT or Proceed on the 335's where there is an actual chip or something you plug in... its just going into the original BMW ECU and toying with the maps that BMW already put there, which is why it is invisible... its not using a separate program or anything, its just changing the original programs).

I had my car in for service last week, no detection of any codes or anything that would indicate something was found.

If BMW did find the tune and there was a problem, yes you could be flagged or worse had your warranty voided, however the possibility of them actually seeing something was done would take some EXTENSIVE searching time on the GT1 computer and a VERY knowledgeable tech to do it all. My guess is with what they pay these guys, unless there is an indication of something going wrong with you car where they would actually NEED to look at the ECU mapping, you'll be safe because they won't want to waste the time and man hours to go hunting for something they aren't sure even exists.

And if for some reason you will need to bring your car in for service because you are having problems with your engine or something, Tony can always ship you a computer to reflash yourself back to stock before you take the car in to the dealer.

same thing i've noticed seth, as long as you don't get on it, you're mpg's will stay the same or even possibly improve.

These cars are gas guzzlers regardless if you floor it at every stop

Was that mostly freeway driving? When I drove up to SF from socal, I had like 32mpg... of course you have an Xi so I think the mpg is a little worse there...

I'm not trying to bash the tune or anything - I'm just saying this is my experience, and the tune may or may not have anything to do with mpg. (Which is actually a good thing to get about the same mpg for more power.)

different elevations, different driving techniques etc.... its going to depend what road you're on as well and what your general drive is. there is no sense in comparing what he got to what you get - like apples to oranges.

seth saw an increase of roughly 8%. as he saw an increase in mpg's, its likely that you would as well.

Well on my normal trips to and from Chicago I get about 25-27 mpg's (depending on if I hit traffic or not) so like I said before, I saw a small increase in highway mpg's. I also go about 80 mph or so. I'm sure if I only did 60 or 65 they'd go up to 30 mpg's like yours did. I'm just saying, I didn't change the way I drive and still saw a small increase. I'm gonna fill my tank tonight so I'll reset the gauge and see how she does in the city.

I know you aren't bashing the tune, I'm just trying to answer everyones questions.
