I'm sure your laptop will be fine.

I was just saying that before we install extra software on your dad's Laptop that he uses for work (And even if unlikely it may caues problems = not a happy chappy), we can do it on your laptop.

Does your laptop switch on ok, just not start windows ? Did you have any discs that came with it (CDs, etc.)

Try starting up your Laptop and early on, as it is at the DOS bit (white text on a black screen) presss F8. You might have to try this several times to get the timing right.

That should start windows up in "safe mode" (only loads the stripped windows). Or it might give you the option of what safe mode to start.

If you can then start up windows like that, then it is a software issue - and you can use a previous restore point to get going again.

You should have a recovery disk that came with your laptop Carl. Stick it in the drive and then switch it on. Give that a try.

OK, buy an external 2.5" Hard Drive enclosure - one that is empty and that you can add a Hard Drive to.

Carefully take out your laptop's hard Drive and install it into the external enclosure. [don't worry you can put it back - it won't harm anything. And normally the HD will come out easily from a bay]

Connect to any other PC. If your Hard Drive is fine it will be recognised and you can then open it. Find all your files and copy them across.

Then you can get a task force together to help you kick life back into your laptop

Think about taking some backups in future. It is usually only after a scare that you do these things. A new laptop is easier to buy, but what price do you put on all your files ?

I'm sure you can find some space on someones PC - but you can also buy another little external hard drive and use that .. you can get them for resonable prices now ~£80 and up. But you can then plug that into your laptop (when it is working again) and use it for backup.

No, you will only copy across your files - leaving all the rest behind.

Your pictures and animation files will be fine if your HD works ok. You can run a virus check on them first of you wish when attached to another PC.

The problem will be in the Windows part, which you don't copy.

It might, but if Tony has offered to help take him up on that offer - it is quite tricky to explain with posts on a forum.

The fact your PC doesn't get past the DOS stage of boot-up is slightly worrying.

Can you enter the BIOS setup when your machine tries to start ? I think that is usually F2 ? It should say as it starts up.

When the laptop starts up - normally you see some white text on a black background ? If it shows a boot screen picture try pressing "Esc". It usually asks in white text if you wish "to enter setup press F2".

It is normally something like F2 - the buttons at the top of your keyboard going left to right F1 - F12.

If you can access your BIOS /Setup that is stage 1 passed.

DO NOT MONKEY ABOUT IN YOUR BIOS. IF YOU HAVE A LOOK AROUND, EXIT AFTERWARDS WITHOUT SAVING ANYTHING.

What happens after that text appears (if you don't press F2) ... try pressing F8 when it appears.
