M Sport - Ride?

Hi,

Got a 335 d M Sport coming, but starting to have concerns about ride. Bought a 4 door saloon so we can drive the in-laws round in the back, we had a test drive on reasonable roads and did notice it was quite a bumpy ride but not unbearable....

They've been in a 535D M sport - is the ride better/worse than that? Will they get out feeling ill ?!

I've got A C Schnitzer 18/19" (can't remember!) on my E46 convertible with sport suspension - will it be much different to that ?

Thanks, worryingly....

Paul

I have ordered an E93 M Sport, with the optional 19" 225m Style wheels, and I am expecting it to be a pretty harsh ride on the RFT's.

However, coming from an Impreza I'm fairly well used to that (as is the mrs) so it shouldnlt be that higher price for me to pay.

Try and get out in one if you can. I don't think anyone is going to be feeling ill after a ride in it, but you will certainly be feeling every lump and bump in the road.

It's going to be a slightly harsher ride than your E46 simply because there's a lot less compliancy in the sidewalls of the run flat tyres opn your E9x....

Does the sport (m sport or sport suspension settings on SE etc) version of the UKe90 come with different shocks or different springs or both?

The m-sport susp is harder than the sport susp you get with the usual 335i/335d.

Have you got the 193 wheels? Or did you upgrade to the 225s? That will have a effect.

Garages usually let you test drive cars before you purchase, so you can see for yourself

rjs> I've got the wheels that come as stanrd on the 335d E90 M Sport saloon.
I think you may be referring to the coupe?

As per my original post, I drove the car I'm getting and found it ok but it was noticable and also on reasonably good roads.

Our last three BMs have been two e46 330d sports and an M3. The 330d sports exhibited more body roll than the M3 but the ride seemed very similar. The M3 was on 17s whereas both e46s were on 18s. When we went for a test drive in a 335d M Sport, both my wife and I commented that we thought the ride quality was better than the e46 even though it had run flats.

I guess it all boils down to what you are used to but personally we wouldn't buy a non sport model. I don't know for sure but I believe the Michelins that are offered on M Sport models offer a better ride than Bridgestones.

Regards

Chris

I am, soz. The e90 comes with the 18" as standard. I test drove one a couple of weeks back, it seemed ok to me, although my current susp is rather hard

Thanks for the feedback guys. Rochester> I would give it to you, but if the ride is terrible I wouldn't want to give you another one to have two terrible rides

Sports suspension has different shocks to standard and m-sport is different again.

The springs are also different for each option.

M-sport and sport have different stabiliser bars to standard, they use the same part, but the set up is different.

I think you can relax.

Although the msport suspension is quite firm, the ride quality is a LOT better than the msport suspension on an e46. It feels stable and planted, with very little roll, but it is far less crashy than the old model.

The e60's do ride a little better again, but the e90 msport is far from harsh.

If you are bombing round country lanes, then you will feel the effect and the bumps won't be entirely smoothed away, but then that's what you are paying for.

On a reasonably smooth A road the ride is just fine for passengers.

BTW I had traditional tyres on my e60 and I don't feel the runflats alter the ride. If anything there is just a slight dulling of any road feedback and a more weighty feel to the car.

I have a 335i m sport coupe and stuck with 193 18inchers, despite being tempted with the 225's. I am so glad. The ride is great, firm but not uncomfortable and miles better than my Z4 3.0 that was on 18's. The dealer said he found the 535d on 19's bad and on that car the tyres are not rflats.
However the 3 series was set up to use rflats where the 5 never was and has suffered since.
Basicly 17's offer bets ride but look too small, 18's best combo for looks and ride and if you do find it too harsh you should not be in the market for this sort of performance car. 19's look great but only buy with normal tires and be prepared to change them in the rain or not get home.

Good point, Stormin, the 3 series was specifically designed to run on runflats and so the ride is not as bad as some people expect.

There were a lot of complaints at e60.net from owners who were deeply hacked off with runflats. It made me quite nervous about having them on my 330i.

Now I have the car I have to say they are no problem at all - I'm pretty confident that this is because the e90 was designed for runflats from the start and the e60 just wasn't.

Interesting. I always thought, for an E90 anyway, that an SE on sports suspension was identical in that respect to an MSport. Oh well.

I felt the urge to find this out so I looked it up on real oem.

Se, msport and sport shocks are all different part numbers.

The msport and sport stabilisers seem to be the same, but set up differently.

Real OEM doesn't have data on springs, but I am pretty certain they are different as well.

Unfortunately, I don't really understand what any of this means technically, but I know that my car has hardly any body roll - which is nice.

M-sport suspension with runflats it excellent and not what all the horror stories tell you. One point to make sure you sort out is tyre pressures.

Put the recommended amount in when cold, plus the first gargage i went to and set them up it didnt feel right so went to another and it registeresd 5 psi lower..!!! Made the world of difference.
