I'm almost 40 years old and have never used a clay bar, ever! I bought the Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit and did my whole car (535i) and every window. I will do the wheels next week as I am too tired to do them tonight. Here is what I did in 3 hours:

Wash (used normal car soap, no Dawn/Joy)
Dry
Clay
Wash
Dry
Wax

DAMN my baby looks great. I can't believe what a difference the clay bar made on the car. Baby smooth. The hood, top and trunk were the worst. Even the windows are mint. It's 11pm so no pictures to post.

For those of you that have never used a clay bar, go get a kit now. Mine was $20 and well worth it.

Anyway, I know this is nothing new for 99% of you, but I am pumped that I lost my clay bar virginity.

I agree with you completely. I used to wash my cars with Dawn or just pay the few bucks for a car wash to do it. I just didn't know any better.

Since I bought this car, it opened a whole new world of detailing Hours and hours of research, about 1500 dollars of detailing equipment including a Flex orbital, etc.

I was absolutely stunned after I clayed the car the first time. Smoother than any glass I've felt.

Congrats 3Aims. I know the feeling of excitement myself when you do something some of us talk about here and it comes out great. It's also reassuring when you flip over the clay piece you've been working and see all that stuff that came off the paint even after a thorough wash. Then you feel the paint when you're done and it's almost orgasmic (well, maybe that's over the top but you know what I mean).

Well done my friend.

Is there a thread that highlights what each color represents on the bar itself (i.e. pollen = yellow, brown = rust, etc). Mine was consistently a dark honey brown after I would do each 3x3 section.

I could make you become a clepto with a clay bar and tell you to get a plastic bag put your hand in it and run it across the washed surface of your car and if you feel any bumps than you didnt clay enough.............But iam a nice guy i wont tell you to do that lol.

No, when you feel that baby-butt smooth paint, it's orgasmic. That's why I'm giving all my nieces a coupon for an external detail for Christmas

Best regards,
