Flood damaged cars

I want to know what you guys think about buying a flood damaged car from NY? I recently had the opportunity to buy a deeply discounted 3-series but passed on it. Good deal or stay away?

Unless you are getting it for free, plus you have a warranty that will not exclude flood related issues, I wouldn't touch a car like that.

Don't... I can't even imagine the number of potential issues that could derive from flood damage

That was my thinking. I am glad I walked away from it.

Not a chance. There's been a ton of articles lately to avoid flood damaged cars from the storms that happened in the U.S. Atleast they listed it as flood damaged...the nightmare would be flood damaged cars being passed off as good condition cars. There are an insane list of potential problems, the least of which is the corrosive properties of salt in the water.

The only thing ( things ) good on it are the body panels.
Fenders, plastic covers.
Anything and everything with unprotected ( painted ) surface is absolutely unusable PERIOD it may look good on the outside, but really it is just a piece of %$#@^ no matter what the sellers says.

That was kind of a secondary thought but I didn't feel like parting it out.

From what I understand, you cannot import/register a salvage / rebuilt title car into Canada. That includes flood damaged. You can however buy it for parts.

Never. Just imagine getting water damage on your cellphone, it's the same thing but now on a large scale that could possibly even put your life in danger. Sensors for the airbags corroded causing your MRS systems to malfunction. Electrical issues that could potentially cause a fire-hazard. The list goes on, of course it may not happen but I'm giving extreme cases.

You can bring it to Canada for parts only once you cross the border, you will get the irreparable title for the car, but the funny thing is even though you will not be able to register it as a drive-able vehicle you will still have to pay air-conditioning tax Ha ! ( $100 )

Fire and flood damage, yes, you can only import into Canada for parts.

In Ontario, all other "salvage" branded cars can be imported and have to go through a structural inspection test at a licensed inspection center. RIV allows one year for you to get a salvage car road worthy.

D. Out-of-Province Vehicles
1. My vehicle has a brand in another jurisdiction. Now I want to register it in Ontario. What will happen?

Vehicle brand information from other Canadian or US jurisdictions will be carried forward when these vehicles are registered in Ontario with the exception of the "Rebuilt" brand. Imported vehicles with a Rebuilt designation or its equivalent from other Canadian or US jurisdictions will be registered as "Salvage" in Ontario thus requiring them to undergo a structural inspection to ensure that the vehicle has been properly repaired before being branded as "Rebuilt" in Ontario.

2. My vehicle has been branded in another jurisdiction and identified as having fire and/or flood damage. Now I want to register it in Ontario. What will happen?

Ontario has expanded its recognition of brands for imported vehicles. The brand of “irreparable” will be applied to all imported branded vehicles previously identified with “fire or flood” damage regardless of the brand identified on the title. For example, if a customer has a Certificate of Title or other acceptable proof of registration with a brand of “salvage” and a description of “flood damage or fire damage”, it must be branded as “irreparable”.

The same rules apply for duty on salvage cars; cars built outside North America, yes you would.
