My Wrx comparison to 320d ??

Hi there all, I am currently driving a 2003 Wrx which is running around 280 bhp and 280ish lb's of torque.. But as of change of job and needing to travel a lot I am now in need to get a diesel and I have seen a few 320d's have been remapped to around 190 but close to 350 lb's of torque but I am wandering is the torque something I would feel a difference in or is it not noticeable at all?

The 320d will be very different to drive.
The extra torque will give you better recovery. So when sitting at 50, you can just leave it in 5/6th and put your foot down and go.

The narrower power band will also mean you need to change gear more often lower down to make sure you are in the right rev range.

You will feel the torque difference. Depending on your driving style, this may appeal to you or it may not.

Give a 320d a test drive and see what you think!

I'm not really expecting much being a diesel just hoping it aint gunna feel extremely slow to me lol my driving style has changed dramatically as I now have to get best economy out my car as possible, hence needing a diesel now.

You are definatly in the wrong forum... The US only has the 335d and no 320d...

The 320d has some nice torque, but you will notice that it runs out of air pretty quickly... It will drive pretty different. Your WRX has power untill the red line, the diesel has it for about... 0.5 sec ...

You get great mileage with it If that is your most important feature, GET IT

horsepower is a better measure of.... power
so, it's really 190 vs 280
the bmw will excel in many other categories though!

Ah my bad, i am new to this site lol yeh it pulls all the way through to red line but I'm just hoping being close to 200 hp after a map it isn't going to feel so much of a slouch to me lol I'm yet to test drive one yet just need sell my car on first before I have the funds to buy one

Just a continuation to shed more light on that.
HP is tq multiplied by a number (or function, I forgot).

The high number of tq for the 320d combined with a low HP will tell you that the redline is super low, and that the powerband is nowhere up at the top of the revband.

vs

You can contrast this to say an e9x m3 or an audi r8. Both motors have high hp, but low torque. That is because they have a high-reving motor. (Higher number of revs [multiplied] by lower torque to get high hp.)
If you were God, and can make any specification engine in the world, and wanted the m3 or r8 engine to make the same HP with LOTS more torque, you would have to decrease the redline. (Again, higher torque to reach the same HP as before, you would have to lower the rpm)


It's a bit of a weird concept, but once it clicks, it all makes sense.

yeah exactly, it isn't hard to calculate horsepower from torque; (RPM x Torque)/5252
keep in mind that horsepower, like torque, is different at each RPM.
