OVer boost pushed my dying coil packs to the end!

Third car i've installed a jb4 on where the coil pack went out withing minutes.

I guess if you have one going bad, and want to know for sure, install a jb4 lol

EDIT / UPDATE
THIS was posted quite awhile ago, when i wasnt very up on the way this stuff worked, Jb4 didnt kill my coils, it just pushed old ones over the edge. Not the JB4s fault.

Pretty sure any tune will do it, but yes adding more boost and getting more power will show the engine's weakness really quick.

All tunes will bring out a bad coil, not just the JB4. Same with plugs.

I've installed two JB4's and never had a problem with a coil pack. Though the first time, I smoked my spark plugs and the second time I changed the plugs preemptively.

Shoot, with 110K of course adding a tune will cause a stock coil to go. They are lucky they lasted that long in the first place

Agreed. OP's results should not be surprising at this point.

my car threw a code when I test drove it with the previous owner. he took it to a shop, got 6 new plugs and a coil.

I stayed quiet, smiled, got a great deal on the car, and installed jb4 the next week. lol

Its not really luck, honestly the fact that 6 stock coil packs lasted 110k miles is impressive on its own, and that i only had to replace one (54$ from autozone :P) And it took me about 20 minutes. Easy day haha

What coil packs do you replace them with if they fail? Bosch? How about the one step colder NGK iridium plugs, what gap do we set them too? Thank you

As a dealer tech who changes these bloody things out sometimes twice a day,

BMW uses 3 manufacturers for their coils

Bosch
Bremi
Delphi

Most of the n51/n52s has Bosch's then by the time they started going bad we replaced them with Bremi, which consequently also sucked, and so now were sticking in the new Delphi's which are the same as the N55, used this S55. THey are the superceed number for us, so now when n51/n52/n54's have been coming in for coils We have to replace all of them with the Delphi's if there's misfires on more than 2 cyls. You can't mix and match, though sometimes i've seen guys accidentally use the new ones mixed with old and don't see any problems.

long story short

they all do the same thing and will scope similarly on a same engine comparison
use them on any n52/n51/n54/n55
Must use all or none for best results
seems to be holding up the best and support the biggest beating , no rubber insulation to crack and a full metal body.
From another forum n55 coils seem to be the way to go due to quality and metal bodies

People are starting to run S55 coils and plugs as well (plugs are bosch motorsport bmw only)

Yeah i love threads like this that blame an aftermarket part for things that most likely have no relation. Now every noob will see this and think jb4s ruin your coils

I suggest a title change

Maybe - Adding boost pushed old coils over the edge!

How does a tune affect the coils? As far as I know, the tuNE can just change ignition timing which shouldn't be any harder or easier on the coils, it just changes when they fire. Or can the tune change the duration or intensity of the fire?
