looking some of the figures quoted....I'm starting to worry now....either there is something wrong AGAIN with my engine...or it must be me....surely, I can be that much of a psycho driver....am i? am i? ...am i ?...???????????....

or actually, it must be the onboard computer that is givin out the wrong figures...can't be me...can't be me...

If you suddenly start driving economically it will take ages / days / hundred of miles for the average mpg to catch up to the new mpg, by then you'll have finished your economy trip!

Try resetting it, then go for a out of town drive to see.

I reset the journey computer on idrive with every fill up, then you know how many miles / mpg / av speed etc for each tank.

I'm gettin 16-20 in town in a manual, but your's is an auto which is even less efficient at town speeds when the torque convertor is not locked up and is busy slurping energy.

Used a whole tank from brim full to low warning in 96 miles at Oulton Park, 9.8mpg - beat that if you can... wonder what CO2/km was for that little trip?

Ian...seriously...I'm a changed man now...LOL...driving in Economy mode from now on...

DSC if always off now, not because of "spirited drive" but because I want to save on my rear brake pads!!! (changed pads and discs in August last year and already got a warning light about my rear pads wearing off last week!!!)

and not flooring the gas pedal anymore!...Only half way thru!....

I used to do this all the time, until someone told me it was actually good for the car to breathe at high revs...ENTER putting your foot down on the regular!

Its because my town driving is only about a 8min drive one way and then about 15mins the other in traffic so the poor bugger never warms up. I think 36mpg is pretty good for that sort of driving and 47mpg doing 80-90 on a motorway run.

Have you checked its not giving the read out in U.S. gallons?. There is that option deep down in the i-drive menus. Happened to a mate of mine whose car was reading 3-4 mpg down on what he expected.

That's shite Kevin. Get that OBC re-set and get on the motorway, give it a long run, clear out the engine and see what happens.

Bigger engines don't like town driving all the time.

Mine's dropped to what I consider to be a diabolical 17.8 mpg doing short runs as I've been helping someone move house. Normally my commute to work is around 19 mpg. Mine now needs a good run imo and it will get one in the next day or so. Do a long run and it SHOULD stay around the achieved mpg post long run, give or take a few tenths of a mpg. Shouldn't drop drastically either thrashing it as I've found.

Thats interesting. How long of a run are we talking? 100 miles? And is a cruising speed (70/75) ok or do you need to be spanking it?

I'd say minimum 80 miles tbh and long enough to get rid of all that nasty carbon build up, moisture in the oil etc. Yours would love it, the big D really is at it's best as most diesels, running hot and hard on a long run. That cruising speed would do it but mine is always +10/15. Spanking it would be three figures plus for a long period.

Always remember when I took the Cayman S to Le Mans. When the time came to return to Blightly the car, by the end of 8 days, had had seriously good long runs to and through France. I 'spanked' it cruising at 150 mph for about 20 miles heading for Calais, no word of a lie the mpg dropped a mere 2 mpg overall, not bad eh.

Kev it will take monstrous amounts of motorway miles to raise it.

Did with mine.
