BMW Diesel and EU6

There will be more stringent emission regulations for the UK in EU6 which will be implemented in 2014. Its main target is to reduce NOX (Nitrogen Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) emissions in passenger cars and BMW have already taken action by offering the £995 optional extra, BMW Diesel with Blue Performance (EU6). This is already available on the F10/F11 520d, 525d and 530d as seen in the UK Configurator but I don't know if performance/economy is affected.

If BMW have taken fairly immediate action to this, that infers there will be a hefty tax penalty for diesel vehicles that do not meet these new regulations.
Attached is the PDF document regarding EU6 regulations and targets.

I feel quite wise in my choice of petrol next, as long as it returns its claimed mileage of 44.8mpg! Hmm...

123, how is it that petrol tax tags will be cheaper than diesel tax tags? If EU6 compliance (likely SCR/DEF-equpped) is only £995, I would think it would be well worth it to ensure you're EU6 compliant and remain in the far lower tax bracket.

Interestingly, the North American-spec 335d and X5d were used to spearhead high-power SCR system implementation, since the EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 met and in some cases exceeded EURO 6 several years before the 2014 implementation date. BMWs risk of messing up the SCR system on the E90 and E73 in the States and Canada was significantly lower than waiting and having unforeseen issues with a EURO 6 implementation of SCR.

If VW's 2.0L TDIs with NOx traps vice higher power diesels with SCR (BMW/M-B/Audi) are an indication, it would seem that anything beyond the 140-150hp level would require SCR.

Indeed, Socom. CARB really drove EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 diesel emissions standards (limits). Essentially the US and Canada were meeting 2014 EU 6-level limits back in 2009.

Arrow Clarification

Here is some clarification from BMW UK:

I asked;

"I've recently seen the implementation of the "BMW Diesel with BluePerformance" option on the N47 & N57 powered F10/F11 on the UK Configurator in preparation to comply with EU6 in 2014, which is targeting a reduction in NOX and PM emissions. What changes are made to the car and engine and is performance/economy affected? Also, if the vehicle does not comply because the option isn't ticked, will there be TAX penalties/BIK % raised?"

Their reply was;

"It will be mandatory for new vehicles sold from September 2014 to be EU6 compliant. Although there is no taxable benefit to the customer for having this option fitted, it will significantly reduce the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of the vehicle, thereby providing compatibility with the strict EU6 emission standards due for introduction in 2014.

The solution currently offered from the factory for the F10/F11 is the NOx Storage Catalyst (NSC). This consists of a catalyst which operates as a NOx trap. Due to its coating the catalyst is capable of absorbing NOx compounds from the exhaust gas. The catalyst will automatically regenerate by a short period of over-fuelling (rich mix). During regeneration the NOx compounds are converted into harmless nitrogen (N2)."

So there you go!

Not that it helps us US diesel owners currently but, it might make it a bit easier/quicker for Euro tunes to transfer to US cars in the future since they will likely have the same ECU's and emissions equipment now. Sucks for you EU guys though.
