Exclamation New here...Wastegate problems/Warranty Questions!

Hey guys, Im new to E90 post. Just got out of my 08 350z and got a 07 E92 335i and I love it! Nothing is done to it yet, have many plans just need money!..

Anyways, Ive been noticing when I start it from a cold start there is a rattle/chrunchy type sound also when I engage the clutch, also in 2nd gear it pulls fine but at higher gears it just feels like my Z, not like a turbo car (bit of lag) ... Yes I have searched I just want to clarify what the problem is..

I took it to this new place called SUMO Motorsports. The owner came from Florida and has held the world record for fastest stock turbo Evo. He definitely knows his stuff when it concerns turbos. He told me he could put in Forge wastegates in and will have to custom fab a bracket for them. He said this will help hold boost and take away the rattle noise.. My question is: Is this possible to do because from what im aware of Forge doesnt make a wastegate for N54 turbo apps.? I may be wrong, and this may be possible to do; Im def. not questioning his abilities I just dont want to spend $600 and nothing get fixed..

2. One of my friends' friend is looking for a 335i also and he told me that BMW has put out an extended warranty for the turbo problems. Is this true? If so will my problem be covered? If not how much do you think it will cost to repair my problems?

I would really appreciate if I could get these questions answered...Ive done extensive searches on here but I would like answers to these specific questions.
Thanx
Also if there are any 335i or M3 owners around here (Charlotte) let me know where yall are and we can meet up.

1. If you are still under waranty, bring it in. You may get both tubos replaced. There is a design change to the wastegate actuator linkage.

2. Stock turbos have internal wastegates. Sounds like your shop friend is not familiar with N54 engines. Save your money.

3. Get a JB3 or Procede V4. That will help considerably with lag.

Good luck!

just had the issue, had to take the car to the dealer twice. First time the updated the software, a temporary fix. After the rattle came back, they replaced the actuators. The actuators are a new design (after BMW realized how many issues the old ones were causing), and the problem has gone away. I was hoping for new turbos, but I am happy that this went away. It is amazing how much lag it was causing my car... not any more

What year did BMW change the turbo design? Which year 335s were the smaller actuators used?

mine is actually out of warranty. has 54k miles unless BMW will do a "gratitude" type fix to save me money since I bought it out of warranty. That is why I was wondering if any of yall knew the pricing to fix it.
Thanx for the answers so far, theyve helped with my plans and decisions.

Both my turbos were replaced for wastegate rattle under waranty. The paperwork said $2800 (if it wasn't covered). I am not sure how much of that was troubleshooting and software upgrade prior to starting turbo work.

I am sure an independent shop or individual could do it for much less, especially with parts from Tischer.

Hello,
I have got the rattle as well, bought it at 66000 kms, with the rattle in warranty, but never took it in at the time... now over 110.000 kms, car running fine, but still rattle, got used to it i think!
Any idea how much it would cost to have the actuators replaced?

If you're going to pay out of pocket to have the actuators replaced you should go ahead and buy new turbos. THe turbos have to come off to do the actuator replacement. Brand new turbos are $635 each from Tischer. I know, it's another $1270 which is a lot but I believe the drop the engine to do the replacement so since you're in there. As another option, you could likely get a used set, have them upgraded with the BMW actuator, rebuilt - possibly upgraded all for less than the $1270.

2-Cents...Depending if you have the updated turbo's with new wastegates-the wastgates can be adjusted at the dealer-about a 20 hour job for customer pay. If you have older turbos you will need new turbos-forget about that-BIG money! Only warranty extended is on the high pressure fuel pump for N54 motor. My suggestions is to go buy an extended warranty from BMW-you should still be eligible for Power Train plus warranty based on your mileage-covers turbos for failure and noise. You WANT a warranty on this car, trust me. They will not give a "goodwill" repair to a second owner.

I am at 32,000 miles and I have the rattle pretty bad. What do I have to do to get this taken care of under warranty? I thought when I opted for the "lag-fix" they said I would have to just deal with the rattle. Are they now finally fixing this under warranty?

you take it in to the dealer and tell them to fix it! The engine is NOT supposed to make that sound, even though they will attempt to convince you otherwise. The problem is now well-known to BMW and they have a procedure to fix the issue. My SA told me that updating the software fixed 80% of the cars with the WG rattle (a bit of BS, but...), and the other 20% is fixed via replacing the actuators with the new design. However, there are plenty of people on here that have received new turbos completely in the event that the dealer doesn't fix the WG rattle after 2-3 attempts.
Bottom line, keep taking it back until it goes away. If you are still under warranty they will fix it, but that is not to say you might not have to play a little hard ball if they are hesitant or try to convince you the rattle is "normal"

I just got my car back after two loooong weeks. haha I heard the rattling then complained to my SA (which I know pretty well) as well as my mechanic and they confirmed that it was the wastegate...etc. So, I got them installed and they told me the new turbos do come with stronger actuators. If they tell you that the sound is normal they are lying and just trying not to put it the hard work of replacing the turbos. Bug the shit out of them and they will do it, plus ALWAYS tip your Service Advisor and Mechanic. Believe it or not they are commission based. Makes things A LOT easier when it comes to big warranty work. If you want to see my Paperwork (receipt) shoot me a pm and you can show them my paperwork. It states clearly that the rattling was the cause for new turbos. Then you can show them that the rattling is NOT "normal"

Well either way looks like Ill be spilling out serious money... Ive heard talk about procede having a "rattle fix" or somthing and same with JB3? Should I just get one of those if that is the case?
*I also tried Mr.5's fix and it helped a bit, there isnt that "crunching" noise after I let go of the clutch now it just sounds like loose change when its at about 2.5 rpm

damnit. i just got my turbos replaced after having the actuators replaced TWICE in the past 2 years, with the rattling still coming back. Now with the new turbos, it is worse than ever on cold start and even on acceleration up to 4k, along with the usual rattle at around 3200 rpm deceleration. Now i have to de-pinout and go to the dealer before 500 miles are up! im at 49.5k! hopefully they can just adjust them...new updated turbos my ass...

I'm not sure if I have this problem but I just picked up an '07 and I only have 4K miles left before its out of the regular warranty although I do have CPO.

I do have a bit of lag in first gear until 2K RPM but from what I'm reading I'm not sure if this is normal. Wondering if I should take it in anyway just to have it looked at.
