Like if you took 2 bmws of the same type and year. One had their oil change every 7500 and one change it every 14k according to the manual.. What type of problems would the 7500 mile oil change avoid?

2.5k is just uncanny...
I don't think that'd do anything compared to changing it every 5k miles.

2500mi oil changes on synthetic? I think I've seen it all now. That's just pissing away money.

Anyway, I do 7500-8000mi. Going out to 14,000mi on good oil and no trackdays/extremely hard driving probably works fine as well.

Don't think anyone has done a back to back test but people have had success with both.

I agree with this, unless you're pushing the car extra hard.

Honestly I think the intervals of oil changes under the BMW program are a bit long. But they're free so how can you really complain.

I don't push my car that often, mostly a DD, but when my 4yr / 50k runs out i'm sticking with 7.5k miles between oil changes.

But isn't the car and oil rated for the 14k?

I am just curious if we tore down 2 cars would difference we would see.. It just seems people have their little traditions when it comes to oil changes. With no real proof going to 14k does any sort of damage.

2,500 mile oil changes might be 'bad for the engine' depending on the cleaner/additive packages used.

Don't forget, it's not just the oil, it's also the filter that has to last.

The filters have even longer life ratings than the oil.

I tend to be of the opinion that BMW sets their interval at 15k simply because they are footing the bill while the car is under warranty and as a function of 'planned obsolescence'.

After 100k miles/6 years, they want you to buy a new car, not keep maintaining the one you're in. Perhaps those 15k intervals produce just enough wear and tear to cause more expensive maintenance issues outside of the warranty period, driving people to avoid keeping the older car.

under normal conditions, you won't see a difference in a 2500 vs a 7500 oil change. after years of service(and 150k+ miles) you might find some issues with a 14k interval, but i doubt it.

is there anyone that has had an oil related failure due to long oil intervals with ANY modern car that has had somewhat reasonable maintenance and doesn't have any inherent mechanical shortcomings? shit like smoking rings on a chevy vega doesn't count.

i agree 14+ can be too long for comfort, but 7500-10000 is a nice feel good range to be able to look in the mirror and say "i take care of my car".

2500 is somewhat overzealous. although i do 2500 intervals on my aircooled ducati, that is a much different beast.

I follow the capacitive sensor. Unless someone who is a BMW engine designer or mech engine design engineer with chemical engineering background tells me otherwise then I'll stick to the computer. Even so the car will probably fall apart before the engine mechnanically done

Do it every 7.5k. There is nothing wrong doing it every 15k..There is a guy who hit 200K with using the 15k method.
