I bought mine at 21 working as a student technician and a part time Server while being a full time student. granted i live with my parents because they are close to my school so its just cheaper.
for those saying to move out and get a job, its not always the more practical decision for some of us. I will be moving out this spring after graduation but i am happy to be blessed with the opportunities I have. on a side note if my parents bought mine for me i would be more than happy and grateful because i would know that they decided to work hard to provide me with something they probably didnt have when they were my age. and i hope to be able to do the same for my children reguardless of pricks who think just because mom and dad buy their child a nice car that it automatically makes them less of a person. /rant |

I purchased my '07 in 2010 for $27K + taxes and I get this question a lot even though I was 24 at the time with a good job.
Read somewhere that the avg price of new cars in America is now about $30K + tax (or not?). My car had another year of warranty on it and I purchased the extended coverage from BMW for $3,200 or something... So for comparisons sake. Fully loaded 2007 BMW 335 coupe for $30K + tax on $27K. Full warranty for 4 years. vs Fully loaded 2011 (at the time) Honda Accord V6 or whatever for ~$30K + tax on $30K. Not sure what their warranty is but it will be somewhat similar to my 4 years. What's the big deal? No one would say anything if I purchased a new accord. It's like leasing vs buying. People have these judgments in their head about what is right and wrong but they've rarely ever actually run the #'s. Last edited by chucktang; 02-28-2013 at 01:00 PM.. |

when i graduated many years ago, i had a choice... brand new civic or used Audi A4. Of course, I chose the Audi. Friends were asking me how i could afford such a vehicle, not knowing that it was the same price or even cheaper than the corollas, civics, and accords they purchased new. An older euro car gets waaaaay more plus points with the ladies than any new econobox jap car (off topic yes, but i just had to point that out).

The hate coming from older people towards younger people who received the car from their parents is pathetic.. As if they would have rejected a similar offer had they been in the same situation... "Hey would you like a BMW?" ... "No thanks I'll take the 1995 civic"
If you worked hard for your car, congratulations. Doesn't give you the right to condescend in such a stupid way. |

I agree with these posts. I could of gotten a brand new civic or slightly used si for the price I got my car for (20k). Cars depreciate quickly and BMW is definitely no exception especially the 3 series.
The only thing that would differentiate between say a 3er vs a civic would be the upkeep/maintenance/gas (is a big one)/insurance etc.

Though they had the means, my parents never bought me a car, because they wanted me to work for it. I worked several part-time jobs in high school, scratched and saved almost every penny, and bought a 9-year old Toyota Camry my senior year.
Sorry, but if you've prioritized buying a BMW over moving out of your parents' house, you've got some odd priorities. Even if you pick up a chick in the Bimmer, good luck explaining your living situation to her without turning her off. I suppose it's the suburban version of "hood rich". |

I'm 22 (almost 23) and just bought an 08 335i. Pretty simple - I worked for it.
Had a job since I was 14, graduated college w/ a diploma in Computer Engineering at 21. I've been programming since I was 16, so I landed a 60k/year job. Some hard work and that's up to 70. I also have my own business which nets me ~25k a year. With some hard work its really not that hard. I've lived on my own since I was 18 and have student debt as well. But really - who gives a shit? |
