FYI
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786974
There are many side effects with aftermarket head units in a BMW. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...light=retrofit Almost nobody does the above because of cost and complexity. Last edited by ctuna; 01-03-2013 at 10:44 AM.. |

I've been deciding on going aftermarket as well. From other posts, a few people have successfully installed the Kenwood 6990 and similar models.
The biggest issue to me is that the screen will be a bit lower than the stock navigation and it doesn't have the simple stock look. If that doesn't bother you, then there won't be any problems. For now, I use a Nexus 7 docked to my dash for my GPS/Movie/Pandora listening.

Issues with an aftermarket head unit
You may get error messages because the Most Bus and all the devices attached to it will be broken. The devices are bluetooth , BMW assist, PDC
. The other problem is when or if you have to take the car in to BMW there computer will not be able to update the software or write to modules that have to be replaced in the course of repairs. It looks for the original configuration of the car when its hooked up its not happy if it doesn't find it. So you need to at least keep the head unit if you want to be able to repair the car . It is recommended you keep your OEM head unit installed if you don't want to have these problems. Also if you happen to have the Logic 7 setup there is no aftermarket head unit that will interface with it you have to get a new 9 channel amp and they don't make those. If people really want to do this with logic 7 they will typically install and ms-8 and amps. It can be done but you have to do a lot to make it right. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin |

An in dash unit will be expensive, quickly obsolescent, and never quite right. You can do a pretty clean install with a state of the art garmin or similar for a couple hundred bucks. Seems a no-brainier to me.

You might want it for more than Nav
Possible reasons are
Rear camera Net surfing Song navigation by screen Internet connection USB and Ipod A2dp streaming audio Better audio in the case of the base BMW system and maybe Hi Fi |
