DIY Tint Removal- Before and After Photos

Hello,

I recently purchased on 07' 328i and am very happy with the car so far. There were a few minor cosmetic problems with my e90 that I am fixing 1 by 1.

I live in Dallas where it regularly gets above 100 degrees...and initially when my car came with tints I was pretty happy.

Unfortunately, upon further review they were making the car look worse overall in my opinion. The tints weren't THAT DARK, but they definitely had a purple color to them, WHICH I HATE!! lol

They also had a few tears and rips in them...it was time for them to go.

After just living with them for the past 2 weeks I decided it was time they go.

I googled "how to remove tints" and came across a handful of youtube videos that showed me how to do it.

Please dont use this as a DIY guide, I am just here to show you the results and the various tools/chemicals I used.

After peeling off the tints, there was a residue left over that was very hard to remove. I initially tried to use Goo Gone and Windex...and that would have worked eventually. But the liquid/chemical to use is HEET antifreeze...in that little yellow bottle. It was much better than Goo Gone.

Dont worry people, I plan on replacing them with quality 3M tints...but I wasnt gonna pay $150 to remove them beforehand!!

Here are the before and after photos...I think it came out pretty good. Overall took me about 30 minutes per door and another hour on the rear window. About 3 hours overall I would say.

Dallas + No tint = One very hot interior. lol
My advice to you, find a tint that you actually like, and have it installed.
The tint does help to block out the sun a bit which will help in both keeping
your vehicle a bit cooler, and protect your interior from UV rays which cause
fading.

If heat is a problem were you live then I would strongly suggest getting Hüper Optik tint, it's a little more expensive but it will hold up incredibly well and has amazing heat dispersement properties. I have a black interior and were I live the summers can be pretty brutal so I decided to get it and all I can say is it was a great investment, it literally keep you car 10-15 degrees cooler then the outside temperature. Also for those trying to remove old tint, I would suggest using a fabric steamer. The steam helps to remove the glue along with the tint which saves you a lot of time and frustration, plus they are only around $15 at walmart.

Hey,

So what exactly is Huper Optik Tint? I was just planning on going to a shop that uses 3M...because I heard that was the best.

I agree a steamer would be a great tool to use...I cheated though and peeled the tints in the middle of the day on a 103 degree day.

Peeled off very easy, although the sticky residue left over was NO JOKE!! Pain in the butt to remove! haha

Seriously though, what is Huper Optik Tint?

Ohh yes, I will be getting them replaced. I suppose I am a little OCD and just couldn't look at the slight purple tint and minor tears in the tints.

They drove me crazy!!

I'll make sure to post pics after I get them re-tinted.

It's a high quality ceramic tint specifically engineered to block heat. Plus it very durable, holds up well to scratching, and comes with a warranty. Watch this video
