None at all - there was no 'ringing' or anything like that. However, that could be because the noise of the exhaust overpowers any sounds derived from bearing wear.

Great and informative thread as usual, Tony. Very impressive! I think you're the first person to actually give a reasonable amount of information about an working turbo upgrade. ASR's upgrade should work as well, but no end user has been forthcoming with any info on this just yet.

Great to know there's such an option out there, and even with the possibility of a remap (which is what I would be more comfortable with than the piggyback that ASR is doing with the PROCede). I see that my next visit to the UK promises to be even more interesting...!

And expensive, Marcel !!!

Some people have told me that ASR have delivered their turbo upgrades to customers, but no one has come along and said how it works, if it works, and what the end result is. I find that all a bit strange! And also, do you have any idea how much ASR are charging for their turbo upgrades? I can't find a price anywhere...

Would you mind going into more detail on that one? I've been considering doing just that as well, but no one has actually come up with an answer to (i) whether the radiator can be bought separately from the whole package and (ii) if so, what's the part number and price?

I've been given access to the part numbers used to make up the various components in the BMWP Power kit. However I can't find the numbers for the brackets needed to mount the water radiator, so if I can't get hold of those I'll have brackets fabricated to suit.

Effectively it's a water radiator, mounting brackets, new plastic duct for the front bumper, replacement front left wheelarch liner, water lines, and various T-pieces to plumb into the existing water system. The main cost will be the radiator itself and I'm still waiting on confirmation of the component costs, but indication is that the radiator itself will be around £250.

There's no official info released anywhere, as far as I know. ASR themselves said that they had built 10 upgrade kits so far and which have already shipped to customers, most of which are in Russia (which sounds realistic as Evotech also told me they sell their turbo upgrades for the X5 biturbo to Russia almost exclusively). Price is rumored to be about 5000 USD for the turbos and the PROCede piggyback, if I remember correctly.

It's certainly strange that no actual customer info has come out until now, only some accelerating videos (which are good, though, if they're realistic which I am inclined to believe). The upgraded 135i holds almost even with a tuned GT-R and a chipped Porsche Turbo.

From what I have read, ASR hadn't commited on pricing - but they have now allegedly got 10 units installed now. I think that $6000 - $8000 has been mentioned on the FI pages, but that was just hearsay.

I assume that can be bought and installed at Bird's? If so, he'll be in for quite a load of work when I come along next spring...you can already forewarn him!

Wow - so at current exchange rates $5000 would be about £3000. Is that installed, or is installation on top?

It's just under two days' labour to get the turbos off and back on again so I can't imagine that's the installed price

especially with yours Tony.

Still need to encode the video down to a DVD and send you. Will give you some idea of the external noise as you disappear over the horizon.

No, I believe that this price is just for the parts, i.e. the turbos themselves and the Vishnu box. I seem to remember that they also offer a package of other upgrades like an intercooler, exhaust system and flywheel, but that would put the price into the 6-8K range I imagine.

Still, almost two days labour is enormous, just for removing the two snails!

Fantastic project Tony, thanks for putting it up on here, was there any excessive lash in the turbine/compressor shaft to housing fit?

Tony,
don't forget to ask turbo dynamics to replace the wastegate seat with some harder material and to replace the wastegate linkage axle bearing to avoid wearing and rattle...

Another good point would be to upgrade to ball bearing instead of sleeve bearing cartridge...

Really interesting all this, if the modified turbos have less or equal turbo lag than OEM I am in for the upgrade, I already have 2 second hand turbos waiting at home.

Maybe we could organise a group buy with Marcel?

Impressive thread Tone! Is there a dictionary around here...?!

I'm really curious too your thread regarding how the upgraded turbos perform.

Looking forward to seeing the results of this Tone. If anyone can make these turbos perform to their full potential its Turbo Dynamics.

I believe you confuse that with the oil cooler. The additional radiator only just came out as part of the performance package for the x35i.

surprised by how bad a state those are in after only 40K miles, I know you've spanked the car but even so it looks pretty dreadful.

Wonder what the turbos are like in a derv motor after that mileage?

I wouldn't worry - it's less about me asking Turbo Dynamics to do x, y & z, and more about them telling me that this is upgraded, that is upgraded etc! They are the absolute best in the business!!!

Should steam in morning. Not smoke from cold. Maybe she is burning a little oil.

He really needs to establish whether it is steam or smoke - I suspect steam knowing what mine is like in this weather.

Exclamation

Time for an update -

Turbo Dynamics have sent over more pictures today showing the state of wear around the wastegate crank arm and the bush. The first picture shows the amount of scoring that has happened on the arm itself - a sign that there is premature wear going on. The two after show the actual wear in the bush itself.

The next two pictures show the work done on the turbine side of things. TD have done a little fabricating to re-profile fractionally the exhaust turbine wheel in order to lighten the wheel for faster spool up, and also to decrease back pressure.

TD spent the rest of yesterday and most of today (12 hours total) fabricating a jig in order to allow them to balance the turbos. They also had to custom make oil fittings for these turbos. Fortunately they'll be keeping this new jig so that other people in future can have their turbos overhauled in a shorter time!

There's still a fair bit to be done, and I'll have more pictures and information as and when it comes through! Am fairly excited it has to be said!
