On cars with the new encrypted ECUs is there anything different that needs to be done or does the dealer simply update as normal?

I guess you are mixing up Nav update to other updates.

Your car has different modules. One example is ECU.
When we say update, they update all of those modules with recent firmware files, which are tweaked to give 'best' results / performances.

Other example is gearbox module.

These two are most important when it comes to drive your car.

idrive module will update during this process but not maps.

I hope it explains things better.

Software update ( my preference for this kind of work ) and independent software update.
Using a competent independent is ok, as autologic is supposed to be the same as genuine BMW software, but tbh, I think there is still going to be some difference between the two ..... Hence my choice for genuine BMW ...... Might be just my paranoia but I'm happier doing it this way
Thanks for the reply

I'll speak to my local Stealers and get a price, will probably take it to my local indy though

Mine had about 7 different updates including ECU, HPFP, even parking sensors and DAB radio!

Any point updating a 2006 318i manual with no idrive?

Judging by the state of the microfilter I replaced recently, the car is still on the original software.

If anything I'd just like more mpg as the performance is so poop (I know you have to rev it) but by the sounds of it this would be offset by the price of the update.

Thanks for that!

This is interesting because I had an idrive update as part of a fix to my faulty bluetooth and 6FL and after that, another problem I had with the traction control stopping me accelerating when changing lanes on the motorway was fixed too.

I suppose they updated more than just Idrive module then.... which was good

You can't actually punch in a 7 digit post code but it will accept a 7 digit postcode on my 2010 LCI although it is a bit Micky Mouse:-

Put in the 5 digit postcode & then scroll right to the list of known 7 digit postcodes & then down till you get to the one you want - a bit convoluted but it does work - provided of course that the postcode isn't newer that the database installed

Im sure you can reset gearbox adaptations without resorting to a software upgrade!

You can, but with the new firmware comes different adaption value limits thus avoiding the origional issue
The rest of the software changes also provide a smoother transition between changes too

So yes, you could just reset the adaptions, but it's false economy - if you have to repeatedly do this ?!
You big as well have the issue sorted once and for all surely !!

How often does the buffer fill up?
Someone here mentioned a car over four years old - thats a pretty long time.

There are too many variables to quantify a specific time scale

Driving style, state of tune, mileage driven, type of miles driven, weight carried in the car ect....

Software update aside, I did the method as described above to try and reset the adaptation but didn't really notice any difference if I'm honest.

I hooked up my car via INPA today to look at some other stuff and noticed that I could reset the gearbox adaptations through that too. I've done it and will report back my findings.

PRoblem is that doing adaptation is quite pointless, yu do it that you need to take car for at least 20 miles drive to let it setup your driving style and in about 1000 miles setup will be messed up again.

Best you can do is update gearbox with new software, THEN adaptation procedur , and then you will se improvment in gear changes speed and fluence of shifting

So what are you meant to do if you've already got the latest software?!

At a guess, in theory, with the new programming the problem should be able to happen any more.
The newer software revision hold be able to cope

FYI, ive got an e91 335i auto AUC (still covered by the warranty) rang Williams in manc telling them about the issue of clonky changes between 2nd/3rd in DS mode, i told them i believed a software fix was issued, they told me its not covered by the AUC warranty and i would have to pay £189 (inc vat) for the priviledge of a full software update?

Going to try Bluebell tomorrow, see what they say

This doesn't work on my LCI, you must have a more up to date software. Shame.

Thats prolly what they are doing at the dealership rather than a complete ECU firmware update.

How do you know what software version your car is running? Does it show in the OBC somewhere?
Craig.
